Consecutive numbers on one transport means taken together. Age 28 against this archive's c. October 1874, which would have made him 26. THE FULLER REGISTER WAS THEN FOUND, and it is better than the De List in every respect: item 1 of the same film, image 126, gives all three as living at PRETORIA, riding with the PRETORIA COMMANDO, and TAKEN AT TOLOSBERG ON 25 APRIL 1901. Its ages are 26, 27 and 53, which match this archive's own dates where the De List's 28, 29 and 54 did not. AND THEN THE PRISONER NUMBER LED SOMEWHERE ELSE ENTIRELY. The medal-roll database at angloboerwar.com holds an entry for a STEPHANUS FRANCOIS BOOYSEN, BURGER, whose PoW number is 18463 — the same number as the register — and it says he was a ZARP, one of the ZAR's police, based at PRETORIA. Quoting a City Coins auction catalogue of November 2020 that described his ABO medal and the papers with it: in action at TALANA, MODDER SPRUIT, COLENSO, PLATRAND (WAGON HILL) where he was WOUNDED IN THE RIGHT LEG ABOVE THE KNEE, SPION KOP and DALMANUTHA — the ZARPs' famous last stand. His applications were completed by his commanding officer, COMMANDANT J. P. DE LA C. SCHROEDER. He was one of FORTY-TWO Boers taken at Tolosberg in the Waterval Valley on 25 April 1901, with two guns and much stock, and was sent to INDIA. This archive has NOT seen the medal or the application; it is strong secondary evidence tied to the register by the number and not by the name. WHAT IT DOES TO THE DISPUTE: he is numbered 18463 and David Schalk Booysen is 18465, two apart on the same transport on the same day, and this man died at EAST LYNNE, PRETORIA, which is the district all three were taken in. That is a FOURTH point favouring David Schalk as his father, and the first that does not depend on a forename. It is still not a document naming a parent. PARENTAGE DISPUTED — see below. A son of the second marriage, and a MESSELAAR — a mason, like his half-brother Willem Hermanus at Indwe. His 1940 Sterfkennis was fetched because it should have named his mother; his widow wrote only “oorlede” for both parents. Married BEATRIX MAGDALENA CATHARINA BOSHOFF at Mosselbaai on 5 SEPTEMBER 1905, certificate 1318 — he 30 and a JONKMAN, she SIXTEEN with her parents consenting. Eleven children; left immovable property and a will. THE REGISTER GIVES HIS RESIDENCE AS PRETORIA, and eleven weeks later David Schalk Booijzen of Goede Hoop, Pretoria — whose 1900 notice names an unmarried major son called Stephanus François — remarried in that same city.
