The Žubrinić Fragments
This archive has said for months that joining the Žubrinići is the largest piece of work left in it. Counting it properly says something worse and more useful: 81 of the 115 loose ends are bare names with neither a date nor a place, and exactly one pair can be joined from what the tree holds.
Corrected: two numbers this archive published were both wrong
The site has been saying “232 records resolving into 94 separate root ancestors”. Neither figure survives checking.
232 was too low. The surname fold split on a bracket but not on a slash, so Žubrinić / Xubrinich and Žubrinić Zubrinic Xubrinich — one surname written several ways in one field — never matched the surname list at all. The real figure is 422. Fixing it brought 214 people into this archive who had been sitting outside it, among them Elias Ilija Žubrinić and Casparus Žubrinić — the subjects of two of this archive's own open questions.
94 was the right shape for the wrong reason. The true count is 115, and it is high because of something the old number never named — see below.
Ninety-two people hang off an alphabet
The tree contains 18 nodes whose entire given name is a single letter — M, J, T — each with a parent called “Žubrinić Zubrinix Xubrinic Zub”, and each holding as children the Žubrinići whose names begin with that letter. One of them has 26 children; another has 17.
That is a filing system, not a family. Between them these eighteen nodes hold 92 people. Counted as parentage — which is what a naive read does — the Žubrinići look joined. They are not: those 92 people are attached to the letter their name starts with and to nothing else.
This archive's own sorting-bucket filter did not catch them, because a bucket is normally detected by words like “to be sorted” and these are named A through W.
What is actually left, and what can be done with it
| State | How many | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Anchored | 7 | A year and a place. These are the only ones a register search can start from. |
| Dated | 26 | A year and no place. Searchable only if you already know the parish. |
| Placed | 1 | A place and no year. A century of register to read. |
| Bare | 81 | Neither. A name and a surname. Nothing in this archive will ever move them, and no amount of work on the tree will either. |
So the honest answer to “can the Žubrinići be joined?” is no — not from here. 81 of 115 have nothing to search on. The joining has to come out of the Otočac registers, and this archive has read two pages of them.
The 4 pairs the tree can offer
| Gregorius Gregory Žubrinić Zubrinic Xubrinich 1785 | Antonius Žubrinić Zubrinic Xubrinich 1796 | same village, born within a dozen years — siblings? · otocac |
| Magdalena Žubrinić 1812 | Martinus Georgius Žubrinić 1838 | same village, one generation apart — parent and child? · otocac |
| Gregorius Gregory Žubrinić Zubrinic Xubrinich 1785 | Magdalena Žubrinić 1812 | same village, one generation apart — parent and child? · otocac |
| Antonius Žubrinić Zubrinic Xubrinich 1796 | Martinus Georgius Žubrinić 1838 | same village, one generation apart — parent and child? · otocac |
All at Otočac. These are leads, not findings — and there were only one of them until the sorting buckets below stopped being counted as parents.
Twenty-five loose ends were hiding behind a label
A fragment here is defined as a Žubrinić with no real Žubrinić parent. The word doing the work is real, and this page was not checking it.
The tree contains entries like Brothers [of Josephus] Žubrinić and Žubrinić … Otočac - Working. These are not people. They are labels somebody typed into the father's slot while sorting, and this archive already found four of them being published as ancestors and removed them — from the list of people. Nobody removed them from the list of parents. So a Žubrinić whose only father is the phrase “Brothers of Josephus” was counted by this page as joined.
Across the whole archive, 21 sorting buckets are still acting as a parent, 218 published people hang off one, and 74 have no other parent at all — 30 Blažević, 22 Prpić, 10 Papić, 8 Žubrinić, 4 Perpić.
What that did to this page
| Before | After | |
|---|---|---|
| Loose ends | 90 | 115 |
| Bare names | 79 | 81 |
| Carrying a date — the searchable kind | 6 | 26 |
| Anchored to a village and a year | 4 | 7 |
| Pairs worth a registrar's morning | 1 | 4 |
The count got worse and the prospects got better. Twenty-five more people are loose than this page admitted — but twenty of the newly-exposed ones carry a date, so the number that can actually be searched for in a register rises from eleven to thirty-four, and the joinable pairs from one to four.
The lesson is narrow and worth keeping: un-publishing a bad record is not the same as removing it. It disappears from the page and goes on doing its work underneath.
Some of them are not fragments. They are the same person, twice.
Before counting loose ends it is worth asking how many of these records are even distinct people. Checking every real Žubrinić against every other on given name, birth date and village finds 17 groups holding 18 surplus records — people this archive has been counting twice.
The test is tiered, because a shared name is not a shared person. This archive holds eighteen Ivan Blaževići, and that is the standing reason it refuses to auto-link names anywhere on the site.
Same day — 5 groups
Identical birth day, month and year. Two people are not born in the same village on the same day with the same given name and the same parents.

Two of the five settle it beyond argument
Josephus Žubrinić, born 16 March 1845 at Otočac, appears twice with identical parents — Michael Žubrinić and Maria Marković in both. There is nothing to distinguish the records at all. Francisca, born 6 March 1846, is the same story: Thomas and Joanna in one copy, Thomas and Joanna Ratkovich in the other. One copy simply knows the mother's surname.
Alexander, born 14 March 1839 at Otočac, shows the mechanism plainly. The two copies give his mother as Magdalena Oreskovic and Magdalena Mande Draženović — and his father as Michael Miho Michaël Žubrinić Xubrinich and Michaelis / Michael / Miho / Michaël “Miko” Žubrinić. It is one boy, entered twice, under two renderings of the same two parents. Which is the same disease the spelling pages have been describing all along, arriving from a new direction.
And one of them indicts the index. Anna Žubrinić, born 5 September 1809, exists twice: once as the daughter of Gregory Žubrinić, and once as the daughter of A Žubrinić Xubrinich Zubrinic — which is not a man. It is the letter A, one of the eighteen alphabetical index nodes this page already describes. The index is not merely holding people; it is generating duplicates of them.
Nothing has been merged. This archive does not edit the tree — it reports what the tree says, and here the tree says the same child twice. The count of loose ends on this page is unchanged, because only one of these groups touches the 115 fragments; the other sixteen sit among the people who already have parents.
