The Faces
A contact sheet meant to be shown to somebody in the family. Every picture here is attached to a name in the tree — but the caption underneath it is a camera filename or a hedge, so the name is somebody's recollection rather than a record. One afternoon with a relative would close most of this page.
This is the one open question in the archive that no archive can answer. A parish register will eventually give up a birth date; nothing in Rijeka or Gospić will ever say which of two women in a photograph is Milka. The people who could say are alive, and the pictures have never been put in front of them in one place. That is all this page is.
What is being asked, exactly
- Is the person named actually the person shown? The name comes from where the file sits in the tree, not from anything written on the picture.
- Who else is in it? Several are groups, and only one person is tagged.
- Roughly when, and where? A decade and a town would let each one be checked against the ages of the people in it.
- Is anything written on the back? Studio stamps date and place a photograph better than anything else here.
The camera kept the only name these have
Uploaded straight off a phone or a scanner. scan0051, 1134835622 — the number is a timestamp, and it dates the scanning, not the photograph.

Somebody was already unsure
These carry a name and a doubt in the same breath — “maybe Peco”, “unnamed”. Whoever wrote the caption is the best witness this archive has, and they were not certain either.

Five “photographs” that are not photographs
Five items in the media library were being published as portraits of ancestors. They are stock question-mark graphics — placeholders uploaded to the tree for people who have no picture — and one still carries a visible Adobe Stock watermark.
| Filed under | Born | What it actually is |
|---|---|---|
| Michael Žubrinić | 1811 | Red question-mark icon, watermarked |
| Maria Catharina Orešković | 1835 | The same icon, same watermark |
| Josephum Antić | 1806 | Red question mark on white |
| Maria Jelličić | 1809 | The same graphic |
| Georgius “Jure” Antić Papić | 1838 | The same graphic |
The dates are the giveaway: a photograph of a man born in 1806 would be remarkable, and four of these five people died before or barely into the age of portrait photography. The build now drops anything marked excluded in sources/media/classification.json, so a placeholder cannot be shown as an ancestor's face. What changed →
A sixth item was reclassified rather than dropped: a picture captioned “Ljubomir Blazevic” is a photograph of the family gravestone, not a portrait of him. It is a document and now sits with the documents.
The 10 that do carry a real caption
Not certain either — a caption is still somebody's memory — but at least somebody wrote a name rather than letting a file manager do it.
