One house, under two names

Eighty-five published Kalanji carry a Klenovica or Povile house number, and every one of those houses is entirely Kalanj — not one is shared with another surname. The two largest looked separate and are not. Petrus Kalanj and Magdalena Butković's ten children are entered Povile 22, Klenovica 22, Klenovica 22, Povile 22, then four at Klenovica 22, then two more at Povile 22. Ivan and Josipa alternate the same way across seven children; Luka and Kata across four. No household moves house nine times and alternates back. Povile and Klenovica are neighbouring settlements and the registers used the two names for one place.

So house 22 holds 67 published people between 1840 and 1890 — the largest single household in the archive, ahead of Smokvica 114 and Krivi Put 136. The gazetteer →

And the smaller numbers are zadrugas too

If house 22 is the extended household, the small late numbers ought to be sons splitting off. Two of them are not. Klenovica 23 (1862–1893) holds the children of four different couples — Mate and Catharina Pa…, Josephus and Catharina Buneta, Jandre and Manda Komadina, Joso and Manda Komadina. Klenovica 36 (1892–1894) holds the children of three — Luka and Kata Miletić, Joso and Manda, Franjo and Tereza.

That is the same signature this archive identified at Smokvica 114: several married couples entered against one number in the same years. So the zadruga is not a Smokvica peculiarity or a Bunjevac one — it is how Klenovica was organised too. Houses 37, 38 and 59 hold a single child each and are something else, probably transient.

One puzzle sits inside it. Luka Kalanj and Kata Miletić have children at house 22, then at 36 in 1892, then at 37 in 1894 — and two of them are called Marija. Whether that is a family moving twice in two years, a renumbering, or two entries for one child is not answerable from this file.

Four boys called Antonius

Petrus and Magdalena's children include an Antonius born in 1865, another in 1868, a third in 1868 and a fourth in 1872. That is not an error. It is a necronym — a dead child's name given to the next born — and it is why the duplicate check has to read two death years as proof of two people rather than evidence of one.

How they reach this archive

Not, as this page used to say, by marrying into the Blažević line — that is one marriage, Lovro Kalanj and Klara Blažević. The chain that actually carries the family runs through Hedviga's husband. Ana Kalanj, born at Klenovica N° 22 on 3 January 1864 and baptised three days later, married Josip de Franceschi; their son Ante, their grandson Pepe. Four siblings, found loose in a photo library

The baptisms of Ana (1894), Franciska (1896), Zora (1898) and Ivan (1900) — four consecutive children of Martin Kalanj and Marija Peričić at Novi Vinodolski — were sitting unattached in the family's own photographs. All four match the tree to the day, and the register calls the father Martin Kalanj Josipov, a patronymic that confirms the grandfather independently of the tree.

Zora's godparents in 1898 are entered Josip i Ana Defrancesco — the child's aunt and uncle, which is how Ana's own place in this family was confirmed from a direction nobody was looking in.

And a death nobody can explain

Martin Kalanj died at Trebinje on 5 August 1900, in Herzegovina, four hundred kilometres from home — seven months after his youngest child was baptised at Novi Vinodolski. He was thirty-eight, with five children under seven. Military service or work following the garrison are the obvious readings and this archive has evidence for neither. What changed →
