The Defranceschi Archive
112 families reconstructed from the registers

Households

Not a family tree handed down — a family tree rebuilt. Each of these is a set of siblings who name the same two parents in the index, grouped and de-duplicated across Latin case endings and spelling drift.

112
households with two or more recorded children
386

How this is built, and where it can be wrong. Each indexed record names its parents. Grouping records by a normalised parent pair recovers the sibling set — but the index writes the same man as Valentino, Valentini and Valentinus, and the same woman as Ursula, Ursulæ and Orsola, so a normaliser collapses Latin case endings and known spelling variants before grouping. Two different men of the same name in the same parish will merge wrongly. Every household here is Inferred and needs the register page to confirm it.
Seven of them no longer are. On 9 September 2026 the Vodnjan marriage register — which no index anywhere contains — was read opening by opening, and it confirmed four of these households from the weddings that made them, naming both sets of parents. It also produced three households the baptism index could never have seen, including one whose husband and wife appear in no register on any film this archive can reach: they exist only because their widowed daughter remarried at forty-nine and the clerk wrote her parents out in full. Those seven carry the reading beneath them. How they were read →

Confirmed from the register · Their eldest son's death entry, 15 December 1830, names both parents with their patronymics.

15 December 1830, house 456. «Pietro figlio di Pietro De Franceschi q.m Pietro e di Maddalena Francin di Giovanni giugali», aged 11 — born about 1819, three years before the earliest baptism this archive had for the household, so they were married by 1818. Cause: scarlatina. In the sacraments column, «senza assistenza spirituale per la malattia repentina» — the same phrase the register used of Giuseppe De Franceschi q.m Pietro ten months earlier, and the second time this family loses somebody too fast for a priest. The two patronymics are the point. The father is q.m Pietro — his own father was dead by 1830. The mother is di Giovanni — hers was alive. And the house is 456, which is not 324 and not 325.

Confirmed from the register · Both parents named in their daughter's marriage, 27 July 1833; Giuseppe's death found, 14 February 1830.

The household this archive circled for two days before it opened. Giuseppe De Franceschi q.m Pietro died at house 324 on 14 February 1830, aged 72 — so born about 1758 — of an organic defect of the chest, and «senza assistenza spirituale per morte improvvisa», suddenly and without a priest. His wife Lucia Tromba q.m Cristoforo shares a surname with Giovanni Tromba, the parson who signs every page of these books and who licensed her son Don Stefano to baptise in 1816 and to marry couples in 1833. Four children: a priest, a ploughman, a weaver and a sister. The two who worked with their hands signed the register with a cross.

Confirmed from the register · Four baptisms, 1858–1865. The index spells the mother **Mathaea Delcarro** twice and **Mathea Delcaro** twice; the father is **Dominicus Defranceschi** in all four.

The eldest son is Pietro, the second Stefano, and the fourth is called Venerius — a boy given the feminine family name Veniera in its masculine form. Naming that hard is a household keeping a line in view. This Domenico is plausibly the Domenico Giovanni Antonio baptised 1819 to Stefano De Franceschi and Bonetta Vellico of house 325, married about 1857 — inf, on the strength of the name, the parish and the arithmetic, and nothing more.

Built from index entries only — this archive has not seen the page. The couple is here because the same two parents are named on 5 separate baptisms, which is a real pattern and not a guess; but the spellings are the indexer's, the children may still be duplicates of one another, and no register has been read to confirm any of it. Treat it as a household-shaped lead.

Confirmed from the register · Three daughters married out of the house, 1821, 1824 and 1825.

«Lucia De Franceschi q.m Pietro», wife of «Alvise Birattan q.m Saba». Her father Pietro was dead before 1821 and too old to be the Pietro who remarried in 1818 — so an older Pietro again. None of these three women appears in any index anywhere.

Confirmed from the register · Four baptisms, 1817–1832, all naming the same couple.

A De Franceschi daughter married out into the Giachin house and stayed in Vodnjan. Her first child is born in 1817 and her last in 1832, so she was married by 1816 and born around 1795 — which puts her a generation above the Stefano and Gio Maria households, not beside them. Two of her four children are given her own name, Domenica and Michaela. Whose daughter she was, the baptisms do not say.

A second daughter married out, thirty years after the first. Her four children run 1848–1857, so she was born about 1825 — which is the right decade to be the Lucia baptised 25 July 1826 to Gio Maria De Franceschi and Lucia Bonassin, or the Lucia baptised 25 August 1828 to Pietro De Franceschi and Maddalena Francin. inf — two candidates, and nothing yet to choose between them.

d. 1831
Confirmed from the register · Named in her daughter's death entry, 6 January 1831.

6 January 1831, house 24. «Domenica figlia di Andrea Palin q.m Pio. e della fu Michiela De Franceschi fu Pietro giugali.» Two deaths in one line. «della fu» puts the mother in the ground already; «fu Pietro» puts her father there too. So Michiela De Franceschi, daughter of a Pietro, was dead before January 1831 — and this archive would never have heard of her at all if her daughter had not died young enough to need her named. A sixth woman who left the surname and came back only through a child.

These come from sweeping 33 in-law surnames through the index and keeping only records that name our family — 209 of them. Francesca Defranceschi and Giovanni Bergamo had seven children between 1831 and 1846. Jacoba Defranceschi married a Johannes Baptista Crosilla — the Crosilla being one of the leading houses of Mione — and their children are recorded in 1831 and 1833; she was buried as his wife in 1882. Two more daughters married a Moscarda and a Tamborin at Fažana within a year of each other.

Confirmed from the register · 3 baptisms in the FamilySearch index name the same two parents.

Built from index entries only — this archive has not seen the page. The couple is here because the same two parents are named on 3 separate baptisms, which is a real pattern and not a guess; but the spellings are the indexer's, the children may still be duplicates of one another, and no register has been read to confirm any of it. Treat it as a household-shaped lead. This may be the same household as Francisci Defranceschi Regii × Carolinæ Bellinich (1849–1849, 4 children). The surnames match once the indexer's spellings are set aside, and the years all but touch. They are kept apart because the given names differ, and merging two households on a surname is how one family becomes a fiction. The register would settle it in a line.

Linked into lineages

A household is the child of another when a recorded child of the first grew up to be the father named in the second. 6 such links survive the tests; 5 candidates were too ambiguous to draw.

The tests: the normalised given name must match; the man must be male and not have died in childhood; the gap between his own baptism and his first recorded child must fall between 17 and 48 years; the parishes must be compatible; and descent is never drawn across regions on a bare name match. A link is strong only when there is exactly one candidate, the parish is the same, and the generation gap is ordinary. Everything else is probable. None of it is proven — two men of one name in one parish is the ordinary case, not the exception.
