Seget
An estate south of Umag, bought in 1720 by a de Franceschi family two generations out of Crete.
Venice granted the land in 1604 to families fleeing Greece and Montenegro. Captain Vincenzo Cuchich of Šibenik sold it in 1623 to the Venier of Venice, who held it a century and made it a working estate. In 1720 Nicolò and Marc'Antonio de Franceschi, sons of Giorgio, bought all of Catarina Bernardo Venier's Istrian property; in 1730 Umag made them citizens, them and their heirs.
They had reached Istria fleeing Crete after the Candian War of 1669. A monograph on the estate records that the family had two branches in Istria — one at Gologorica, one at Umag and Seget — and that family archives survive from both. One De Franceschi household was still counted at Seghetto in the 1945 census.
