This is a record, not a family. The index names these people on one page and does not say how they are related — a parent, a spouse and a godparent look identical here. Nothing above has been joined to anything.

Identity here is by name, not by resolved individual. Where two people of one name appear in this archive they share this page, and it is for the reader to keep them apart — the surrounding text usually makes it obvious. Nothing here is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.

Back to Carnia

…and dead at Ovaro in 1978. Everything on this page describes a road out of Carnia into Istria. This is a man who came back up it, and lies in the valley his family had left. Labin is also where the surname is first indexed anywhere in Istria — Aloÿsius Defranceschi, 1615. Furlani is not our name and nothing joins him to this family. He is here because the whole argument of this page is that the two countries were one world, and a stone that says born Albona, died Ovaro proves it in five…

The Lines

…Franceschi on the 1820 cadastral map. And the entries this archive had been reading as «Pula 1667» are from this register. Still not placed — but it is now the first parish this archive will read page by page. Labin (Albona) — unplaced Aloÿsius Defranceschi, 1615 — the earliest the surname is indexed anywhere in Istria, and forty-six years before Moncalvo. One entry, and it belongs to nobody yet. Rovinj (Rovigno) — allied Carlo was appointed to the court here in 1850 and Camillo took refuge here…

A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. **Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual**: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
