Also found: «la vivente Antonia Maria De Franceschi», widow of Damiano Storcovich, alive 30 June 1819 with a daughter aged 40 — a second woman of the name born about 1750, alongside the Domenica already dead in 1817. /research-log/ 9 Sept 2026 hit The 1821…
…Copulatorum — DGS 005497894, image 188 Four generations off one page. From 1821 the register rules new columns — «Sponsus et Genitores» — and names both parties' parents in every entry. The first result: 9 June 1821, house 356, «Gio: Maria De Franceschi figlio di Pietro De Franceschi q.m Gio: Maria e della fu Veniera Francin q.m Dom.co de Rondel», aged 22, marrying Lucia Bonassin, aged 27. That is the household this archive had reconstructed from the baptism register — now with its father,…
…1828, house 366: Michiela Damiana, daughter of the late Domenico Pastrovicchio and «della vivente Veniera De Franceschi q.m Gio: Maria», marries at twenty — and the witness is «Cristoforo De Franceschi fu Gio: M.a, Agricoltore», her uncle. So Gio. Maria De Franceschi, dead before 1818, is now shown with three children — Pietro, Cristoforo and Veniera — none of whom has a baptism on any film this archive can reach; the register found them by naming their dead father the same way three times across ten years. Also…
…widow's second wedding names her grandfather. 25 June 1830, house 483: Veniera De Franceschi, widow of Domenico Pastrovicchio, remarries at forty-nine — and because a widow's remarriage is written out in full, the clerk records her parents: «Gio. Maria De Franceschi fu Pietro e Michiela Zambaletta fu Cristoforo». The father who has been a bare name since March 1818 now has a father and a wife of his own, and the Vodnjan line stands five generations deep off this one unindexed book, back to a marriage of the…

Also confirmed, independently: Bertoša's toponymic correction on Moncalvo, Matejčić on the palazzetto, and the 1679 headmen's list — all three of which this archive already had, which is a check on its own…
The Spine
…This archive has never had anything on her but a name. She was of a family with a palace on the square, facing the bishop's. And in the De Franceschi archive at Zagreb, folder 6, there is a wedding piece printed at Pola: «Nelle fauste occasioni delle nozze Maria De Franceschi — Luigi Salamon, Pola, 25 ottobre 1897.» The two surnames marry twice, seventy-eight years apart. Salamon is not a rare name in Istria and none of this is proof of anything about Francisca herself. What it does is turn her from…

…d'Anni 40· Vedova Testes — + Gio. Batta d'Ambra, fabbro + Antonio Bellicaglia di Giovanni, muratore A whole generation arrives in six lines. Pietro is forty-two, so born about 1776 — and his father Gio. Maria De Franceschi is already dead, which carries the family in Vodnjan back into the middle of the eighteenth century, well behind the register's own first page. He is a widower: there was a first wife, Veniera Franzin, daughter of a Domenico Franzin, and she died…
…«q.m Gio. Maria» — father dead. Two men of the same name in one small town at the same moment, and the register keeps them apart by naming the father every single time. (doc) One caution, marked plainly: the baptism register of 1816 records Gio Maria De Franceschi as a living household head. If Pietro's father Gio. Maria was dead by 1818, then the Gio Maria fathering children in the 1820s is a second man of the name — most likely a grandson. That is an inference and it is not yet proved. (inf) Two…

…the register changes its ruling. The columns become «Sponsus et Genitores» — the parents of both parties, in every entry, by name. From this page on the book gives pedigree instead of hints. And the first thing it gives is the whole line. Gio: Maria De Franceschi, twenty-two, is the son of Pietro De Franceschi q.m Gio: Maria — the very man who remarried in this book on 30 March 1818 — and of Veniera Francin, Pietro's first wife, the one already dead when he did. …was «Veniera Francin q.m Dom.co de Rondel». This groom's dead father is «Pietro Francin q.m Dom.co de Rondel» — the identical patronymic, so Veniera's brother. The boy marrying here at nineteen is Veniera's nephew, and a first cousin of the Gio: Maria De Franceschi who married Lucia Bonassin in 1821. Francin is not Franceschi. But in Vodnjan the two families are one household deep in each other, which is precisely why a name-match search on this parish would produce nonsense in both directions. (doc — logged…

Five generations, from a Pietro who stands behind a marriage of the 1770s, through Gio. …Read the widows' entries first A first marriage names the couple. A widow's remarriage names her parents, because the clerk has to establish she is free to marry. The deepest generation this archive reached at Vodnjan — Gio. Maria De Franceschi fu Pietro and Michiela Zambaletta fu Cristoforo, a couple who appear in no baptism register on any film — came out of their daughter remarrying at forty-nine. If you are scanning a marriage register for depth, the widows are where it is.…

A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. **Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual**: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
