The Falco Archive
The Zampiello maternal name

Ferrara

Giuseppa Ferrara married Angelo Zampiello and became Francesca's mother — and until now the Zampiello page did not name her once.

This page corrects an omission, and says so. The archive has a Zampiello page which follows that family from Arpaia to Brisbane. It did not contain the word Ferrara. Giuseppa Ferrara is Francesca Zampiello 's mother — a grandmother of the Brisbane generation — and she was missing from the page about her own daughters.

Giuseppa Ferrara, and the spelling problem in her own records

She married Angelo Zampiello — born 31 August 1895, died 25 April 1972 — and the archive can name five of their children. The family papers write her Ferrara. The Italian civil records write her FERRARO, in every one of the three entries found so far.

Which is her name? The archive does not decide. Ferraro and Ferrara are both real southern surnames, the civil clerk had one and the family kept the other, and a name that changes between the register and the household is a fact about the family worth keeping rather than tidying. Both spellings are carried, and the register indexes her under each: Ferrara · Ferraro.

Her children

ChildDatesNote
Tommasina Zampiello (Ruggiero) 9 Feb 1921 – 2 Jun 2004 Married Michele Ruggiero. Her 1939 marriage act is one of the three records that name her mother — the act ↗.
Francesca Zampiello (Falco) 27 Apr 1928 – 10 Sep 2022 Married Carmine Falco in 1955. Generation eight of the direct line. Her birth is on an estratto from the Comune di Arpaia — cited, not linked
Caterina Zampiello (Falco) Married Raffaele Falco . Two Zampiello sisters married two Falco brothers, and both households went to Brisbane.
Angelo Zampiello 1935 – 26 Apr 1935 Two infant sons, both born in 1935 and both dead on 26 April 1935. The civil index carries the death twice — an_ud1197792 ↗ and an_ud1197796 ↗. Whether they were twins the record does not say in so many words — but two sons of one couple dying on one day, in one year of birth, is what it shows, and it is set down here rather than left out because it is hard to read.
Aniello Zampiello 1935 – 26 Apr 1935

Her own parents — where the tree contradicts itself

Two versions sit in the family tree and they do not agree:

The 1912 birth date is the problem. A woman born in June 1912 would have been eight years old when Tommasina was born in February 1921. So either the 1912 Giuseppa is a different person of the same name — Arpaia is small and the name is not rare — or the date is wrong. No record has been found that names Giuseppa's parents, and this archive will not choose between two tree entries when it has none.

One candidate has been looked at and not accepted: a Giuseppa Alfonsina Maria Ferraro, born 1881 in the Benevento civil registers, flagged «is this her?» in the tree. 1881 is as unlikely as 1912, in the other direction, and nothing but the forename joins her to this family. FamilySearch ↗

The name turns up four more times, in two different centuries, and none is joined to Giuseppa. Each row links to the register volume it was read from.

The archive's own note on the Elisa record reads: «Ferrara is also the Zampiello maternal surname; connection untested.» It is still untested. Chapel 070 is not the chapel the Falco lie in — they are in 082 — so proximity is not evidence either way. Nudgee, no link

What would settle it

Every Ferrara record is listed with its source at the register →, and the family it married into is at Zampiello.
