Nicola Rivetti
father
dead by 1821 «figlia di NICOLA RIVETTI defunto, di professione CONTADINO, domiciliato ivi» — from his daughter Chiara's civil death act of 13 September 1843, read at full resolution. THE TRADE IS THE POINT: he is a contadino, not a Don. That rules out the gentry couple, Don Nicola Rivetti and Donn'Anna Quotolo, which this archive had carried as the rival candidate since 2026.

Anna di Ruggio

death 13 Sep 1843 «CHIARA RIVETTI VEDOVA DI PASQUALE FALCO, nata in Arienzo, di anni OTTANTA, di professione contadina» — died at eight in the evening on 13 September 1843, in her own house. Born about 1763. Declared by Luca Cioffi, 33, sartore, and Giovanni Cioffi, 48, contadino, both of strada Camellara. She had outlived her husband by nearly nine years.

death 1821 «CARMINE RIVETTI, di anni cinquantatré, contadino … figlio di NICOLA RIVETTI Defunto, di professione CONTADINO, e di ANNA DI RUGGIO Defunta» — read in 1821 and set beside Chiara as a possible brother. The 1843 act makes him HER BROTHER, born about 1768.

THE ONLY RECORD IN WHICH PASQUALE FALCO ACTS FOR HIMSELF. Every other sighting has him named by somebody else: on his children's acts, or on his own death act of 1834. Here he walks into the town hall with his brother Giuseppe and reports a neighbour's child dead. He is fifty-five, which against his baptism of 24 October 1767 is one year out — ordinary. And his trade is given as COLONO, a tenant farmer, where his death act of 1834 calls him contadino.

A SECOND DAUGHTER OF GENERATION TWO, and a sister of Vincenzo Falco and of Anna Falco. Aged thirty-two, so born about 1794 — which sits between, and matches neither of, the two Maria Falco baptisms of 1789 and 1790 in this house. Giuseppe Falco
father
named as declarant 1 Dec 1816 «e di Giuseppe Falco, di anni trentadue, massaro di campagna, domiciliato ugualmente nel luogo indicato» — declaring the death of Crescenzo Rivetti alongside Gioacchino Falco, the two of them «parenti del defunto». PLACED HERE WITH RESERVATION: the street matches this household, but the age does not. This man is 32 in December 1816; the Giuseppe of strada Camellara is 36 in June 1818, which would make him 34 here. The trade differs too — massaro di campagna against contadino. It may be the same man loosely aged, or a third Giuseppe.

Giuseppe Falco
father
named as declarant 24 and 28 Oct 1817 «Giuseppe Falco, di anni trentasette, di professione massaro di campagna, domiciliato in questo comune, strada Camellara» — twice in five days: on 24 October for a neighbour, Marianna Petrillo, and on 28 October for Vincenzo Falco's infant son Raffaele, where he and Sabato Vassallo are called «PARENTI». Vincenzo is a grandson of Matteo; Giuseppe is a documented son of Matteo, which would make him Vincenzo's uncle — and the register's own word for the relationship is kin. Aged 37 here, so born about 1780.

Giuseppe Falco
father
named as declarant 8 May 1818 «e di Giuseppe Falco, di anni trentasei, di professione contadino, domiciliato in questo comune, strada Camellara» — declaring the death of a neighbour, Emanuela d'Onofrio, with Domenico Balletta, 40, sartore, of the same street. THIS IS THE SIGHTING THAT TIES THE OTHERS TOGETHER: one month later, on 7 June 1818, the birth act of his daughter Maddalena gives him as thirty-six, contadino, of strada Camellara, husband of Antonia di Guida. Same age, same trade, same street, four weeks apart — one man, not two. Balletta is his neighbour in October 1817 as well.

Giuseppe Falco
father
named as declarant 20 Jun 1823 «e GIUSEPPE FALCO FU MATTEO, di anni quarantatre, di professione Contadino, regnicolo, domiciliato strada Camellara» — THE FIRST CIVIL RECORD TO STATE HIS PARENTAGE OUTRIGHT. The clerk adds «fu Matteo» to tell him from the other Giuseppe Falco of the town, and in doing so confirms from the civil series what the archive previously had only from the parish books: this Giuseppe is a son of the late Matteo Falco. Forty-three here, so born about 1780 — which agrees with the thirty-seven he gives in October 1817. He declares with Cesare Giglio, 50, of the same street, at the death of Maria Crisci, three years old, daughter of Marcello Crisci and Maria Rosa Mauro.

father
named as declarant 20 Jun 1823 «sono comparsi GIUSEPPE FALCO FU MATTEO, di anni quarantadue, di professione Contadino, domiciliato in questo comune, strada Sant'Andrea, vicino della defunta» — atto 39, the SECOND «fu Matteo» sighting in two days, at the death of Antonia Cossi, nine months old, daughter of Francesco Cossi and a MARIA FALCO. TWO CAUTIONS. He is forty-two here and forty-three the day before, from the same clerk — a plain measure of how loosely these ages are kept. And he is given here on STRADA SANT'ANDREA where the day before he is on strada Camellara: in this form a declarant described as «vicino» is recorded at the street of the house where the death happened, so a declarant's street is NOT reliable evidence of where he himself lived.

named as declarant 25 Mar 1824 «e GIUSEPPE FALCO, di anni quarantadue, di professione colono, regnicolo, domiciliato ivi strada Camellara, vicino del defunto» — declaring beside his brother PASQUALE FALCO. The only act found so far in which the two brothers appear together, and the first to give Giuseppe's trade as colono rather than contadino. Forty-two here, so born about 1782.

Francesco Cossi and Maria Falco lost Antonia in June 1823, Giuseppe in March 1824 and Giuseppa here in April 1825, and Giuseppe Falco declared every one. The register calls him «vicino» each time and never «parente», so nothing states a relationship — but three appearances for one household is a pattern, and it is the best hint yet that this Maria Falco is his kin. His trade drifts again: contadino in 1823, colono in 1824, MASSARO here; and his age goes backwards, forty here against forty-two the year before.

THIS CLOSES A LIFE THE ARCHIVE HAD ONLY OPENED: her civil birth act of 7 June 1818 records her born on strada Camellara to Giuseppe, thirty-six, and Antonia, and she died a week short of her seventh birthday. A documented grandchild of Matteo Falco and Francesca Crisci, and a first cousin of Vincenzo Falco's children. Declared by CESARE COSSI, 30, and FRANCESCO COSSI, 34, both of strada Camellara — and Francesco Cossi is very likely the husband of the Maria Falco for whose three dead children Giuseppe Falco had stood in 1823, 1824 and 1825. The two houses declare for each other.

HE DIED NINETEEN DAYS AFTER HIS SISTER MADDALENA, who was seven. Declared by MARCELLO COSSI, 35, and ANIELLO DIGLIO, 50, both of strada Camellara — Diglio is the same neighbour who stood with Giuseppe in April, when he was given as forty-six.

THE FOURTH CHILD OF THAT HOUSEHOLD he has declared (1823, 1824, 1825, 1827); the register calls him «vicino» every time and never «parente». NOTE THE AGE: 37 in 1817, 40 in 1825, 46 twice in 1826, 40 here — and the trade slides from massaro di campagna to massaro to colono. Either the clerks guessed or there are two Giuseppe Falco on that street.

THE FIFTH CHILD OF THAT HOUSE HE HAS DECLARED, and the FIRST TIME THE REGISTER CALLS HIM PARENTE rather than vicino. The kinship between Maria Falco and this Giuseppe Falco is now stated by the record; the degree is not. Caution: he is 56 and a possidente here, against 40 and a colono eighteen months earlier — either the clerks guessed, or there are two Giuseppe Falco on that street.

Raffaele Morgillo d. 9 May 1832
PersonEventDateWhat the register says
Carlantonio Morgillo
father
b. 1780×1786 — not settled named as the husband on his wife's death act of 1830. His age will not settle: three sightings inside twenty months give thirty (Feb 1816), thirty-six (Oct 1816) and thirty-three (Sept 1817) — «Carlantonio Morgillo, di anni trentatre, bracciale, strada Maddalena». Birth therefore somewhere in 1780×1786; this archive formerly printed «about 1784» from the 1817 act alone, which overstated it. Constant across all three: bracciale, and the household on strada Maddalena in 1817, thirteen years before Rosa died on strada Camellara.

A FOURTH sighting, and it tightens the age: thirty-three in September 1817 and thirty-three again in August 1818, against thirty in February 1816 and thirty-six in October 1816. The two later readings agree on a birth about 1784–85. AND A LEAD: Giuditta is daughter of the LATE Carlantonio Morgillo and Manilia Rivetti, and this Carlantonio declares her death as kin. He is very plausibly her brother, which would give this man's own parents. The act says «parente» without saying how, so it is not asserted.

named as declarant 20 Oct 1819 «Carlantonio Morgillo, di anni trentacinque, contadino» — a FIFTH sighting. Thirty-three in August 1818 and thirty-five fourteen months later: fast by a year, but the run 33 (Sept 1817), 33 (Aug 1818), 35 (Oct 1819) is broadly consistent and keeps the birth around 1784-85. The outliers remain the two 1816 readings, thirty and thirty-six.

Neapolitan custom named a first son for his father's father, and the name at the head of this line is MATTEO FALCO, who married Francesca Crisci. What these tables establish

Before Matteo

The line proper begins with Matteo Falco in the 1760s. But Falcos are at Arienzo long before that, and one early household has something none of the others do — a stated place of origin:

Anno Domini 1714 … infanti nato ex Francisco Falco Casalis Paulisii et Antonia Loffreda filia Dominici … imposui nomen Joseph.

Casalis Paulisii — of the hamlet of Paolisi, the next comune east and over the provincial border into Benevento. Francesco Falco was an incomer. He and Antonia Loffreda baptised three children at Sant'Andrea: Giuseppe in July 1714, a son on 20 September 1717 whose name the machine reads only as "Mart…es", and Domenico in February 1726.

Is he Matteo's ancestor? The dates allow it — Matteo was an adult by 1759, so he could be Francesco's grandson, or just possibly the son of 1717. No document joins them, and this archive will not join them for the sake of a tidy line.

Further back still: a Tommaso Falco and Marta Mara baptised a daughter Lucretia at San Felice a Cancello in 1637 — the entry written in Italian, not Latin. And an index page of 1654 already lists Falcos among Crisci, Morgillo, Martone, Rivetti, Carfora, de Lucia and Porrino: the whole in-law network was in place before the Restoration.

A footnote with a long echo — in 1896 a Pasquale Falco of Arienzo, a carrettiere, married Mariangela Attanasi born at Paolisi. The traffic ran both ways for two hundred years.

Where it stops

Matteo Falco's marriage to Francesca Crisci — which would name his own father and settle whether Francesco of Paolisi belongs above him — should fall in the Arienzo marriage register between about 1760 and 1766. It has been searched for across 2,056 transcribed marriage and death pages and not found: either it is not among the transcribed leaves, or it is not filmed. His baptism would fall in the gap the baptism register leaves between 1738 and 1761.
