David Schalk Booysen

PRISONER OF WAR. A printed transport list in the Pretoria government archives, image group 008019246, carries THREE CONSECUTIVE BOOYZENS shipped on the CITY OF CAMBRIDGE on 3 JUNE 1901, all entered from PRETORIA: 18463 STEPHANUS FRANCOIS, 28 · 18464 PETRUS JACOBUS, 29 · 18465 DAVID SCHALK, 54. Consecutive numbers on one transport means taken together. Age 54 against a birth of 9 June 1848, which would have made him 52 and six days short of 53 when the ship sailed. THE FULLER REGISTER WAS THEN FOUND, and it is better than the De List in every respect: item 1 of the same film, image 126, gives all three as living at PRETORIA, riding with the PRETORIA COMMANDO, and TAKEN AT TOLOSBERG ON 25 APRIL 1901. Its ages are 26, 27 and 53, which match this archive's own dates where the De List's 28, 29 and 54 did not. If it is him, he was a Transvaal burgher in arms at fifty-two, taken and deported, and he came back — he remarried at Pretoria in November 1905. Fourth on the 1863 list, and THE DIRECT ANCESTOR'S BROTHER — Willem Hermanus is sixth on the same list. For the whole of this project he was a line on that list and nothing else. His wife's 1900 death notice gives him a household: married ELIZABETHA MARGARETHA MARAIS at LADY GREY, the same small Cape church where his brother married Kathleen Barry in 1879; eight children; and by 1900 he was at Pretoria, living in a zinc building in Market Street. He signed her notice there in March 1904 — and on 27 NOVEMBER 1905 he married again at Pretoria, to JOHANNA ELENA STOLS, widow Lowies, of Skinners Court. He was 56, a widower of GOEDE HOOP, PRETORIA, and the register gives his birthplace as CRADOCK. The Remarks column cites his remarriage certificate from the Master, NO. 4795 — which is the number of his first wife’s death notice, so the two documents point at each other and the identification needs no inference. His own death is still not found.

…The folios followed, into a Pretoria transfer register · Method The land-index folios led to RAK 2384, a deeds transfer register for Wonderboom South — Pretoria, the district where David Schalk Booysen was living when he remarried in 1905. Three rows on one page carry the name, and the household reads Petrus Jacobus, David Schalk, Magdalena Johanna: this archive's direct line, name for name. One row transfers land to a DAVID SCHALK BOOYZEN on 9 April 1907, which would be seventeen months later than anything else held for the man of that name.…

…1900 · A zinc building in Market Street, Pretoria — and the direct line’s own brother A run of ten index entries under Booijzen in the Transvaal probate records carried no dates, no places and nothing to identify them. They all belong to one death notice , and it opens a household this archive did not have: the family of David Schalk Booysen , born 9 June 1848 — the brother of the direct ancestor . A dossier is every mention of a person anywhere in this archive, gathered automatically after the site is built and linked back to the page it appears on. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual — where two people share a name they share this page, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Nothing on a dossier page is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.
