One street, four generations

Strada Camellara

The surname Falco identifies nobody at Arienzo. The street does. Four generations of this family lived on strada Camellara, and where a record gives a street and nothing else, the street is the evidence.

This page exists because the name does not work. Arienzo holds at least a dozen Falco households and probably two unrelated Falco stocks — a labouring one and a gentry one with a Don for a father, a nun for a daughter and a priest for a son. Which Falco? →

What separates them is the street, the trade, the parish and the spouse. For this family the street does most of the work, and the street is Camellara.

The archive holds 783 records that name it, across 137 surnames. 89 of them are Falco.

The dated ones run from 1815 to 1844. That is the span of the registers that have been read, not the life of the street — the parish baptisms put a Falco household on it from 1789, and nothing suggests it began there either.

What kind of street it was

Every trade the records attach to a Camellara household is a working one: contadino and colono over and over, a vaticale (a carrier with a mule), two sartori, a filatrice at nearly every hearth — and, in 1844, a zampognaro, a bagpiper.

No Don lives here. That single fact is what lets the archive refuse the gentry Falco: reading a «Don» as decoration rather than as class is a mistake this archive has already made once and published.

Nine parish baptisms, and Anna's act of 1820 which puts Pasquale alive on the street. He died here 1 Oct 1834; she 13 Sep 1843.

GIUSEPPE FALCO × ANTONIA DI GUIDA

1802 – 1854

Married 4 Aug 1802. Seven children, including Don Giovanni the deacon and Raffaela. Alive here in April 1854, aged about seventy-four.

GIOACCHINO FALCO × VITTORIA CIMMINO

1796 – 1851

Married 16 May 1796. He died here 14 Feb 1851, aged seventy-two.

VINCENZO FALCO × ANDREANA CRISCI

1814 –

Married December 1814. Their son Raffaele born here 10 May 1818.

RAFFAELE FALCO × ANGELA ROSA MORGILLO

1844 – 1880

Married 5 Mar 1844 at Sant'Agnese. Both died in April 1880, six days apart.

FRANCESCO FALCO × RAFFAELA FALCO

1850 – 1855

Four deaths in one house in five years: Antonio (2) in 1850, Clemente (5) in 1853, the mother in 1854, Giovanni (3) in 1855.

NICOLA DIGLIO, contadino

1818 – 1844

A declarant on the street in 1818, with Giuseppe Diglio, 41, beside him. His daughter Nicoletta married off it in 1844 — and a Nicoletta Diglio had been buried on it in 1818.

Both of the street. He is 24, contadino, son of the late Pasquale Morgillo; her father Pietro is a zampognaro — a bagpiper.

Two men of the name on the street in one year. The nearest thing yet to a peasant Falco cluster, and still unattached to the line.

A tailor of the street, aged seventy, so born about 1769.

Their daughter Giovanna Margarita, 23, married off the street on 30 December 1844.

A second tailor. His daughter Francesca, 35, married off the street on 6 December 1844.
