The Blažević Archive
Measured parish by parish, and wrong twice before it was right

Which Books Are Indexed

An indexed book is a search box. An unindexed one is a sitting in front of a film. 12 of 17 parishes are searchable as text across 22 collections, and 5 are not searchable at all — and the useful part of this page is how often that answer has been wrong.

Everything this archive plans depends on one question: can this book be searched, or must it be read? A parish with an index turns four brick walls into four lookups in an afternoon. A parish without one turns the same four into a week in front of a microfilm.

So the table below is not a convenience. It is the thing that decides where the effort goes — and it has been wrong twice, both times in a direction that would have cost a sitting.

Presence, not completeness. This table says a book has entries in the index. It does not say the index holds all of them. The Karlobag Luckinić holding is seven entries for a family that lived there for generations, and that is the standing reminder.

What can be searched

ParishCollection EventWhat was probed, and what is known
Bribir 1 collection Croatia, Church Books, 1516-1994 death WRONG BEFORE. «Bribir, Primorsko-goranska» has a real indexed DEATH register — 80+ records found, deaths dated 1843-1855 — plus baptisms 1858-1876. BEWARE: a wide window returns «Bribir, Šibenik», a different place 200km away, and it outranks ours 593 to 7 probed place-only, narrow windows 1750-1839
Crikvenica 1 collection Croatia, Delnice Deanery Catholic Church Books, 1571-1926 baptism RESTORED 20 Sept — it was in the FIRST coverage table and the rewrite dropped it. Dense 1750-1858 and ZERO from 1860. Its 448 surnames are Crikvenica-town ones (Czar, Lovrich, Skiljan, Xuppan) and NOT this archive's: Klenovica belongs to Novi Vinodolski, not here probed place-only census 1750-1899
Grižane 2 collections Croatia, Church Books, 1516-1994 baptism MEASURED 20-21 Sept and DENSE, not «one hit»: 200 of 200 in both windows, events 1698-1894. Also Croatia, Primorje-Gorski Kotar, Births, from 1569 to 1901 probed place-only census 1690-1899
Hungary, Croatia-Slavonia, Births, from 1653 to 1922 burial BURIALS TOO, and heavily — 104 of 200 rows in the 1800-1899 window are burials against 96 baptisms probed place-only census 1800-1899
Karlobag 2 collections Croatia, Church Books, 1516-1994 baptism — probed 1680s 1780s 1850s 1900s
Croatia, Lika-Senj, Births, from 1689 to 1898 baptism reaches 1733 in practice — the earliest baptism index here probed 1680s 1780s 1850s 1900s
Krivi Put 2 collections Hungary, Croatia-Slavonia, Births, from 1653 to 1922 baptism found ONLY under Tomljanović; Prpić returns gravestones probed 1780s 1850s
Hungary, Croatia-Slavonia, Deaths, from 1681 to 1990 death a real death register index probed 1780s 1850s
Krmpote 1 collection Hungary, Croatia-Slavonia, Births, from 1653 to 1922 baptism matches the film, which begins 1879 and not 1815 as the catalogue says probed 1880-1894 observed
Ledenice 1 collection Croatia, Church Books, 1516-1994 baptism FOUR entries in two centuries — 1748, 1749, 1845, 1888 — so not zero, but not a register either. Row 33 stays a film read IN PRACTICE. The 1888 one is «Marija Milka, 16 May 1888, Luka Kalanj × Kata», who IS in the tree with the year alone probed place-only, 1700-1899
Novi Vinodolski 2 collections Hungary, Croatia-Slavonia, Births, from 1653 to 1922 baptism MEASURED 20 Sept and MUCH WIDER than this row used to claim: dense in EVERY window from 1651 to 1899, 300 of 300 fetched. Row 32's book, and Klenovica's parish — 101 of this archive's people are at Klenovica probed place-only census 1650-1899
Hungary, Croatia-Slavonia, Births, from 1653 to 1922 burial BURIALS TOO, and only from 1860: ~25 per cent of rows in the 1860-1899 windows are burials and none appears before probed place-only census 1860-1899
Otočac 2 collections Croatia, Church Books, 1516-1994 baptism MEASURED 20 Sept: the index runs 1830-1858 AND STOPS. Births 1700-1799 return ZERO; 1800-1829 one stray (Dabar, 1816); 1830-1834 return 83, 1835-1837 return 200, 1855-1859 return 200 — and 1860-1864, 1865-1869, 1870-1874, 1875-1879 ALL RETURN ZERO. That is the filmed book, 1834-1858, and nothing after it. Ahnentafel 5, born 1867, is outside both probed place-only census 1700-1869
Austria, Küstenland, Births, from 1536 to 1919 baptism a second collection, and the one carrying 1848-58 — and the one carrying 1836-38 as «Otočac, Küstenland, Austria». Same 1830 floor probed place-only census 1700-1869
Selce 1 collection Croatia, Church Books, 1516-1994 baptism FIVE entries, 1803-1844, not zero. Place string is bare «Selce, Croatia» — WHICH Selce is unconfirmed. The surname probe missed them: this row said «tested under Antić» and one of the five is «Margaritam ANTICH, 7 Nov 1844» probed place-only, 1700-1899
Senj 6 collections Croatia, Church Books, 1516-1994 baptism — probed 1680s 1780s 1850s 1900s
Croatia, Lika-Senj, Religious, from 1621 to 1920 baptism a FOURTH Senj collection the first pass never saw probed 1680s 1780s 1850s 1900s
Hungary, Croatia-Slavonia, Births, from 1653 to 1922 baptism — probed 1680s 1780s 1850s 1900s
Croatia, Lika-Senj, Births, from 1689 to 1898 baptism — probed 1680s
Hungary, Croatia-Slavonia, Marriages, from 1678 to 1927 marriage INDEXED. The first version of this file said it was not probed confirmed 1885, 1907
Hungary, Croatia-Slavonia, Deaths, from 1681 to 1990 death INDEXED. The first version of this file said it was not probed 1900s

Smiljan 1 collection Hungary, Croatia-Slavonia, Births, from 1653 to 1922 baptism too late for ahnentafel 426, a generation of about 1700 probed 1834-1857 observed
5 parishes with nothing

What cannot

These returned nothing — first under two surnames each, then again under a probe that names no surname at all. That second test is what makes them zeros rather than gaps.

ParishWhat was probed
Brinje NOTHING. Re-confirmed 20 Sept by place-only probe, which names no surname at all — so this zero is not a spelling artefactprobed 1700s 1800s 1860s + place-only 1700-1899
Gospić NOTHING. Re-confirmed 20 Sept by place-only probeprobed 1700s 1800s 1860s + place-only 1700-1899
Sinac NOTHING. Re-confirmed 20 Sept by place-only probeprobed 1700s 1800s 1860s + place-only 1700-1899
Smokvica NOTHING for OUR Smokvica. A place-only probe returns ten burials at «Smokvica, Mestna občina Koper, SLOVENIA» — a different village in a different country. The Blažević home village is still not indexed at allprobed 1730s 1800s 1850s + place-only
Sv. Juraj (kod Senja) NOTHING. Row 6's book, filmed 1697-1852, and the index does not hold it under any of the three place strings this archive's parish table gives itprobed place-only 1690-1869, under «Sveti Juraj», «Jurjevo», «Lukovo»
And that is the whole Blažević side. Smokvica, Krmpote before 1880 and Ledenice are the villages Hedviga's father's people came from, and none of them can be reached from a search box. The indexing in this archive's country is a Karlobag–Otočac–Senj phenomenon: the mother's side is searchable and the father's side is not.
The corrections

This table has been wrong twice, and both are worth keeping

First it said the index was a baptism index. In capitals: «across every parish this archive uses, the index is a BAPTISM index — not one parish marriage register and no parish death register before 1891 is indexed anywhere». That was disproved within the hour by a single query narrowed to a date range. Senj marriages and Senj deaths are both indexed. They had been sitting behind a query that was too broad to show them.

The search returns a ranked, capped result set. When a parish holds several collections, a broad query returns the best-ranked ones and the others do not appear at all. They are not absent. They are below the cut. Narrow by date and they appear.

Then it said seven parishes held nothing, every zero produced by naming two surnames. Hours later a baptism turned up at Karlobag filed under «Piberich» — a form occurring exactly once in the whole parish, because it is one clerk's reading of one hand rather than a name anybody bore. If a surname can hide a person, it can hide a parish. Re-probed by place alone, three of the seven were wrong: Bribir had eighty-odd indexed deaths, Selce five baptisms, Ledenice four entries. The Selce row indicted its own method — it recorded its zero «under Antić», and one of the entries it had missed is «Margaritam Antich».

How to probe it yourself

Two instruments, and neither is trustworthy alone

By surname — what every earlier pass used. It finds a family when the clerk wrote the name the way you expect, and it is silent when he did not. No list of guesses ever contains «Piberich».

By place alone — q.anyPlace plus a date window, naming no surname, counting only the rows whose returned place string matches. This is what corrected three of the zeros.

Three rules, each learned by getting it wrong.

1. Run controls. Karlobag and Senj return 100 of 100 in every window from 1700 to 1899. If they do not, the instrument is broken and not the parish.

2. Read the place string back. «Bribir» is two villages two hundred kilometres apart and the wrong one outranks ours 593 to 7. «Smokvica» returned a village in Slovenia. Never trust the query you sent.

3. Neither probe is authoritative. The place-only probe returned zero for Krmpote, where the surname probe had found a 1895 baptism the same day. A zero means «not found by this instrument» and nothing stronger.

And a «Deaths» collection is often not a register. Croatia, Lika-Senj, Deaths, from 1500 to 2024 is the Find a Grave index — gravestones this archive already holds on the stones page — sitting in the results looking exactly like a parish death register. It is not counted above.

Hard edges

Where the indexes start and stop

Karlobag reaches 1733, and nowhere else reaches the eighteenth century at all. That single fact is why four of this archive's brick walls became lookups.

Otočac runs 1830–1858 and stops. Measured by place census: nothing before 1800, one stray at Dabar in 1816, then 83 entries for births 1830–34, 200 for 1835–37, 200 for 1855–59 — and zero for 1860–64, 1865–69, 1870–74 and 1875–79. That is the filmed book, Otočac baptisms 1834–1858, and nothing after it — though the index begins four years earlier than the film.

Senj births stop at 1894, which is what puts two of the open questions out of reach and why the letter to the parish was written.
