The Blažević Archive
700 events that fall inside a film this archive can reach

What Is Left to Read

Reading a register is not expensive. Not knowing what you are looking for is. This is the worklist: every person in the archive whose birth or death was written in a parish whose films are reachable, and the year checked against what each book actually covers.

Until now every sitting at a film viewer began with a search. This page exists so that the next one begins with a list.

Every published person carrying a place is matched to the parish whose register would hold the entry, and the year is tested against that parish's holdings. A person only appears below if the book that should contain them is one this archive can actually open.

These ranges are catalogue labels, not films. Krmpote-Vodice is catalogued Births 1815-1896 and its film begins in 1879 — which is how six research plans came to be written against books that could not deliver them. Open the film and read one page before trusting any line here. The audit →
The two that matter most

One book holds nine direct ancestors

Selce deaths, 1790-1886. Nine people on the direct line died at Selce inside that range — ahnentafel 24, 25, 48, 49, 50, 51, 96, 98, 99. Checked person by person: five of the nine have an image attached, but not one of those images is a death record — they are a marriage and two baptisms in which these people appear as parents. No death entry for any of the nine has been seen. One volume, one sitting, nine confirmations or nine corrections.

One of the nine has now been read, and it went the other way. Ahnentafel 51 is in this book at Die 8ª Maji 1842 — Margareta Jellicich, Uxor Georgii, which is the tree's date to the day. What it contradicts is another register: the 1835 marriage and the 1838 baptism both call her daughter filia Denatorum — both parents dead — seven years early. Question 13b →

And the largest single harvest is Novi Vinodolski. 125 events fall inside its baptism register, which is catalogued from 1650 — a century older than anything this archive currently holds. That is the parish for Klenovica and Povile, where this archive found that house 22 in each is one house holding 67 people.

Opened on 14 September 2026, and the 1650 holds — but the hand is a surprise. The film's own target, shot at the Croatian State Archives in 1987, reads ŽUPA NOVI VINODOL · ROĐENIH 1650–1786, which is a second independent statement of the date and far better corroboration than Krmpote ever had.

What the first written leaf shows is that the register is in Croatian, not Latin: “Na 13 Maja + Krsti pop Jurij Skohil…” — on 13 May, priest Jurij baptised. Every register this archive has read so far is Latin until the 1880s. Novi Vinodolski is in the vernacular two hundred years earlier — this is the Glagolitic littoral, where the parish books were kept in Croatian when everywhere else used Latin.

So the Latin toolkit does not transfer. Whether the entries name parents at all was the thing in doubt, and they do: read closer, the formula carries the father, then njegove — "his [wife]" — and then a kum, the godparent.

The limit is the hand, not the format. That reading is structural rather than a transcription: personal names in this script are not being lifted reliably at the resolution available. A sitting on this book should expect to spend its time on palaeography, not on searching.

A second household census, seventy years older — and in Croatian

Grižane, the parish next door to Novi Vinodolski, keeps a Stanje duša of 1738 — images 100–140 of a 579-image film. It is not a table but a list, household by household, with every relationship written out in Croatian.

Matij Blazich · žena njegova Jelena · sin Matij · hći Katarina · sin Ivan · hći Agnia · sin Juraj — his wife, son, daughter. Others are identified purely by relationship: Mikula … Blaškovicha zet, Blašković's son-in-law.

And the by-names are here too, in 1738. Juraj car Vulin, Matij car Jurišin, Lovro car Mikulin — of Vule, of Juraj, of Mikula. That is the system question 5 is about, seventy years earlier and thirty kilometres up the coast from Selce.

Two Blažević households head pages here, and no connection to this family is claimed. Blažević is among the commonest surnames in Croatia; this archive's Blaževići are a Smokvica Krmpotska family thirty kilometres south, and nothing links them to Grižane. It is written down because the name is one of this archive's own and a reader would otherwise find it and wonder.
