BORN 8 MAY 1863, christened at the Union on 25 September 1866 - daughter of Avelino Lerena and Ambrosia Traibel, with the paternal grandparents given as SANCHO and MARIA FERNANDEZ and the maternal as 'Dos Juan' - the machine's reading of DON JUAN Traibel - and Ysabel Centeno. Her godparents were ADOLFO DE LAPUENTE and MERCEDES MENDEZ DE LA FUENTE, for whom she is named, which is this family's habit four times over. SHE IS THE BEST CANDIDATE FOR THE MERCEDES LERENA WHO STOOD GODMOTHER AT THE UNION IN MARCH 1880 to her sister Josefa's daughter - who was in turn named Maria de las Mercedes for her. She was sixteen then, which is young and not impossible; the rows are kept apart until an act joins them. The dispensation table here records a MERCEDES LERENA who married DON LUIS P. MARQUEZ at the Catedral on 9 July 1883, identified there as this woman - and an unmarried Mercedes Lerena in 1880 is what that marriage date requires.
