Every letter this archive has written, in full - drafted, sent and answered - so that a draft is a page somebody can act from and not a file nobody opens.

A reading that cannot be done from the films ends at a person: a parish priest, an archivist, a custodian. These are the letters to them. Each says who is being asked, what for, and what the answer would settle, and carries the text. Nothing on this page has been sent by the site; sending is a person's decision, and the state shown is the state of the letter.

Ana Marić's baptism (about 1830-1836) and her marriage to Nikola Žubrinić (about 1850-1852)

Župni ured Otočac (address to confirm from the diocese's directory)

What it settles
Ahnentafel 11 is the emptiest person on the direct line: a name, two tree links and nothing else. Her baptism would name ahnentafel 22 and 23 and the house; the marriage would name both sets of parents. The filmed baptisms begin in September 1834 and the filmed marriages in 1859, so neither is on any film this archive can read.

I am researching the family of my grandmother, HEDVIGA "SEKA" BLAŽEVIĆ, born at
Senj in 1926. Her father's mother was TEREZA ŽUBRINIĆ, born at Otočac on
29 November 1867. The work is published, free and without advertising, at:

https://daviddef.github.io/TheBlazevic/

Anything you send would be published there in full and credited. A negative
answer is worth having too, and I publish those as results.

WHAT I HAVE ALREADY READ. Tereza's parents were NIKOLA (Nicolaus) ŽUBRINIĆ,
born at Otočac on 24 January 1834, and ANA, his wife. In your baptismal
register, read from the filmed copy, they are at ŠUMEĆICA No. 2:

3 July 1856 Stjepan — mother entered "Anna nata Štrumbulko"
15 September 1858 Marija — mother entered "Anna Marić"

The same woman is written with two different family names two years apart. I
think the first is a house name (a nadimak) and the second her surname, but that
is an inference from two entries, not something any document says.

===========================================================================
1. Ana's own baptism — the one thing that would name her parents
===========================================================================

Ana had a first child in 1853, so she was born between about 1830 and 1836. The
filmed copy of your baptismal register begins in SEPTEMBER 1834, so a baptism
before that month is on no film I can reach, and I have looked at the first
months after it without finding her.

1a. The baptism of ANA MARIĆ ("Štrumbulko"), Otočac, about 1830-1836. It
would give her father's given name, her mother's name, and the house.

===========================================================================
2. Their marriage
===========================================================================

2a. The marriage of NIKOLA ŽUBRINIĆ and ANA MARIĆ, about 1850-1852. I cannot
find it in any index, and the marriage register on film for your parish
begins in 1859. It would name both sets of parents.

===========================================================================
3. If it survives
===========================================================================

3a. A status animarum (stanje duša) for Otočac after 1846, or any household
list that shows ŠUMEĆICA No. 2. It would show who lived there and when
they were born, and whether the name Štrumbulko was kept beside Marić.

I am not asking blind about the books: the film shows the registers were kept
carefully, with the village and house number in the margin of each entry.

Whatever you can say, including that a book does not survive or is held
elsewhere, would help — and if the originals are held by the Državni arhiv u
Gospiću or by the diocese rather than the parish, I would be grateful to be told
where to write.

Thank you for your time, and for keeping these books.

Catherina «Catta» Luckinić's baptism (the tree says 30 March 1727), and a Luckinić household of the 1720s

What it settles
Ahnentafel 105 has a death entry and no birth. The baptism book for 1727 was read and carries no Luckinić on the tree's date, and the book's own index lists none. A parish can say whether leaves are missing or another volume holds her.

I am researching the family of my grandmother, HEDVIGA "SEKA" BLAŽEVIĆ, born at
Senj in 1926. One of her ancestors on her mother's side (the PAPIĆ line) was CATHERINA
"CATTA" LUCKINIĆ of Karlobag. The work is published, free and without
advertising, at:

https://daviddef.github.io/TheBlazevic/

Anything you send would be published there in full and credited. A negative
answer is worth having too, and I publish those as results.

WHAT I HAVE READ. Your death register records her on 29 May 1790 as
"Catharina annorum 70, vidua defti Jacobi Pilepich" — the widow of the captain
of the port. A family tree gives her birth as 30 March 1727, and her marriage to
Jacob Pilepich as 22 November 1747; I have found no document for the birth.

===========================================================================
1. Her baptism
===========================================================================

I read the baptismal book for 1691-1770 on the FamilySearch film (Hrvatski
državni arhiv). The year 1727 runs from image 49 to image 50. There is NO
Luckinić baptism on 30 March 1727 (the entry for that day is a daughter of Lovri
Bulanich), and none anywhere in 1727. The book's own alphabetical index has no
Luckinić at all.

1a. The baptism of CATHERINA LUCKINIĆ, with her parents' names. I have now read
every baptism from June 1717 to the middle of 1732 for her and she is not
among them; her death entry of 1790
gives her age as 70, which points to about 1720. If the filmed copy has
missing leaves, or if her entry is in another volume, I would be grateful
to be told.

(For the record: I have found her MARRIAGE, 22 November 1747, in the marriage
register of 1736-1804, where she is "Katta, daughter of the late Vicko
Luckinich", so it is only her baptism that is missing.)

1b. A GAP I FOUND WHILE LOOKING. In the filmed copy the last entry before
the turn of a leaf is dated 4 May 1726, and the next entry, on the back
of that leaf, is dated 11 January 1727. Nothing from May to December 1726
is written between them. Are the baptisms of those eight months in the
original (on a loose leaf, in another volume, added later), or were none
entered? A baptism in that window is a place Catherina could be.

===========================================================================
2. A Luckinić household at Karlobag in 1727
===========================================================================

On 24 August 1727 the baptismal book names "the wife of Vicko Luckinich, called
Morica" as a godmother (and on 10 March 1726 a godmother "Mara, wife of Vicko Luckinich"), so a Vicko Luckinić and his wife were living at Karlobag
that year. The FamilySearch index lists a Mare Luckinić baptised on 13 April 1725 to a
Vicko Luckinić. I have now read that entry, near the foot of a page that is out
of date order: it appears to record a daughter ANA to Vicko Luckinić and his wife
MARE, so the index may have taken the mother's name for the child's.

2a. The marriages of VICKO LUCKINIĆ, before 1725 — the marriage register on
film begins in 1736. The baptismal book names his wife JELENA as a
godmother on 23 January 1718 (and, less certainly, on 11 August 1722), and
a wife MARA or MORICA in 1726 and 1727, so he may have married twice; a
second marriage would be about 1722-1726.
2b. The deaths of Vicko and Morica, which would give their ages.

===========================================================================
3. Where the originals are
===========================================================================

3a. Whether the registers of 1691-1770 are in the parish, or were transferred
to the Državni arhiv u Gospiću or the diocese — so that I write to the
right place.

Thank you for your time, and for keeping these books.

Where the registers of Sv. Jakov Krmpote went when the parish priest handed them over

Subject: Upit o čuvanju matičnih knjiga — župa sv. Jakova Krmpote i Rijeka 1892

Poštovani,

obraćam Vam se na uputu vlč. Jakova Filipovića, župnika koji iz Ledenica
upravlja župom sv. Jakova Krmpote. Dana 15. rujna 2026. odgovorio mi je:

«Matice i arhiva svih župa kojim upravljam je predata u Riječku
Nadbiskupiju.

razumijem.

S poštovanjem,

I am researching the family of my grandmother, HEDVIGA "SEKA" BLAŽEVIĆ, born at
Senj on 3 August 1926 and died at Johannesburg in 2001. The work is published,
free and without advertising, at:

https://daviddef.github.io/TheBlazevic/

Anything you send would be published there in full and credited. A negative
answer is worth having too, and I publish those as results — the replies from
your Senj colleagues and from vlč. Filipović are already published as such.

WHY THIS IS A HOLDINGS QUESTION AND NOT A RESEARCH REQUEST
===========================================================================

One question is now asked from two directions and answered from neither.

* The PARISH says the registers went to the Archdiocese, and that the
Archdiocese passed them to the State Archive.
* The STATE ARCHIVE replied the same day that it does not undertake research
of this complexity. It did not say what it holds — which is fair, because
I had asked it to search rather than to list.

So nobody has yet said whether these books SURVIVE, or where they now are. The
Archdiocese is the one party that handed them over and would hold the transfer
record. That record is what I am asking for.

I have read the filmed copies (Hrvatski državni arhiv, through FamilySearch)
leaf by leaf. Every item below is something the films do NOT cover, and I say in
each case exactly where the film stops. I am not asking anyone to repeat work I
can do myself.

===========================================================================
1. SV. JAKOV KRMPOTE — sixty-four catalogued years that are not on the film
===========================================================================

The FamilySearch waypoint for Krmpote-Vodice is catalogued "Births 1815-1896".
THE FILM ITSELF BEGINS IN 1879: image 10 is page 2 and reads «Godine 1879». I
checked it leaf by leaf.

1a. Does a BAPTISMAL REGISTER for Sv. Jakov Krmpote covering the years
BEFORE 1879 survive, and who holds it now?

1b. Does any MARRIAGE REGISTER for that parish survive, of any period?
No marriage register for Sv. Jakov Krmpote is filmed at all — not a gap
in a range, the event type is simply absent.

What hangs on it: JURAJ «JURKO» BLAŽEVIĆ, a seljak of Smokvica Krmpotska house
114, is named in your register in 1895 — «Jurko Blažević i Tereza rođ.
Žubrinić, selj.», at the baptism of their son Marijan, 12 April 1895, page 168,
entry 26. His baptism, most likely 1855-1870, would name his father outright.
Five further generations, back to a Mateša Blažević born about 1750, rest on a
link no document yet states.

===========================================================================
2. RIJEKA, 1892 — a gap in the film, twice over
===========================================================================

LJUBOMIR «LJUBO» BLAŽEVIĆ was born at RIJEKA on 1 MARCH 1892. The filmed Rijeka
parish registers (koha:722509) run 1594-1920, and their own list of volumes
gives the baptisms as:

... Rodjeni 1880-1886 · 1886-1890 · 1890-1891 · 1900-1901 ...

There is no 1892-1899 baptismal volume on the film, and the alphabetical Kazalo
skips the same span — 1800-1889, then 1895-1902. The entry falls into a gap by
image and by index both.

2a. Does a RIJEKA BAPTISMAL REGISTER covering 1 MARCH 1892 survive, and in
whose care is it now?

A Krmpote peasant household had a child in Rijeka in 1892 and then went home —
the next child is baptised back at Krmpote in 1893. The entry would give the
address, and the address would explain why.

===========================================================================
3. THE TRANSFER RECORD ITSELF
===========================================================================

3a. If there is a PRIMOPREDAJNI ZAPISNIK or an inventory of what the
Archdiocese handed to the State Archive — for the Crikvenica deanery, or
for Sv. Jakov Krmpote specifically — a copy of that one document would
answer 1a, 1b and 2a together, and would tell me which volumes to ask
the State Archive for BY SHELFMARK rather than by description.

That last point is why I am writing to you rather than back to Rijeka. An
archive that will not search on a description will often produce a volume that
is named. I do not yet know the names.

Thank you for your time, and for keeping these books.

Oskar Kosina's burial, Buenos Aires, 15 January 1954

Franjevačka kustodija sv. Jeronima, Trg sv. Frane 1, 23000 Zadar
Kustos: fra Tomislav Šanko · tel 023/250-468
Subject: Upit — Oskar Kosina, umro u Buenos Airesu 15. siječnja 1954.

WHY ZADAR AND NOT BUENOS AIRES. The Croatian pastoral work in Argentina was
the Zadar Franciscans' from 1929, and fra LEONARD RUSKOVIĆ — the first Croatian
priest in Argentina — served from 1929 until his death in 1958, which means he
was the priest on the ground in January 1954. The Hrvatsko vjersko središte sv.
Nikole Tavelića did not yet exist in 1954, so the 1954 funeral is NOT in its
books; it is in whatever the custody's own people kept. And in JULY 2026 the
last Croatian friar, fra Josip Peranić, left Argentina after forty years, so
Buenos Aires now has no Croatian priest at all and Zadar is the address that
will still be there next year.

They have also just published a spomenica on the whole Argentine mission —
«Tejar – Buenos Aires: Hrvatsko vjersko središte 'Sv. Nikola Tavelić'» — so
somebody there has recently had the entire archive open on a desk.

The Buenos Aires centre itself: Av. dr. Ricardo Balbín 4925, 1430 Buenos Aires,
tel +54 11 4542 3400. NO EMAIL HAS BEEN VERIFIED for it. A city listing gives
`tehar@ciudad.com.ar`, which is an old ISP domain and unconfirmed — not written
to, because an unverified address is a stranger.

BUENOS AIRESU 15. SIJEČNJA 1954., u dobi od 31 godine. Znamo to iz njegove
tiskane sličice u spomen, koju obitelj još čuva.

Ovoga tjedna pronašli smo i njegov dolazak: u argentinskim lukama knjigama
upisan je kao

KOSINA, OSCAR — 25 godina — oženjen — «SEGKA» (Segna, tj. SENJ) — COLONO
Dolazak: 9. listopada 1947., parobrod PHILIPPA, ukrcaj u GENOVI

Vaše kustodije, a vlč. fra LEONARD RUSKOVIĆ, prvi hrvatski svećenik u
— dakle i u

1. Postoji li u arhivu kustodije ikakav zapis o SPROVODU ili SMRTI Oskara
Kosine u siječnju 1954. u Buenos Airesu — knjiga umrlih, dnevnik, kronika
kuće, ili spomen u tadašnjem hrvatskom listu?
2. IME NJEGOVE SUPRUGE.
5. I jedno šire pitanje: u istom parobrodu PHILIPPA, šest mjeseci ranije
(1. travnja 1947.), stigao je i FRANJO KOSINA, 47 godina, agronom, upisan
kao «CROATA (HRVATSKA)». Sumnjamo da je bio brat našega pretka. Je li Vam
to ime poznato iz argentinske zajednice?

Znam da ste ovoga ljeta, odlaskom fra Josipa Peranića, zaključili četrdeset
godina njegova rada i, čini se, i samu hrvatsku franjevačku prisutnost u
Argentini.

https://daviddef.github.io/TheBlazevic/kosina/

Anton Kosina (1921. – 2003.), utemeljitelj Vaše misije — obitelj iz Senja

WHY THIS LETTER. The mission he founded is the single best custodian of his
record: its own founding papers, a photograph, and almost certainly word of his
death in 2003. The published press gives 1958–1985 and nothing personal.

WHAT TO ASK FOR, in order of value:
1. A PHOTOGRAPH of vlč. Kosina that the family may publish, with a credit line.
2. His ORDINATION year and where.
3. Anything on his DEATH in 2003 — date, place, where he is buried.
4. Whether the mission holds anything of his: letters, parish bulletins, the
founding documents of 1967.
Offer in return: what this family holds — his birth parish, his parents, the
1943 raid that killed his father and two sisters, and his 1991 restoration of
his grandmother's grave in Senj. The mission will not have any of that.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Poštovani,

pišem Vam iz Australije, iz obitelji iz Senja. Vodim obiteljski arhiv

njemu: «OBNOVIO POP ANTE KOSINA ~ 1991».

njegovu životu izvan toga ne znamo gotovo ništa.

Molim Vas, ako je moguće:

1. Posjedujete li FOTOGRAFIJU vlč. Kosine koju bismo smjeli objaviti na
obiteljskoj stranici, uz navođenje izvora?
2. Znate li godinu i mjesto njegova REĐENJA?
3. Imate li podatke o njegovoj SMRTI 2003. — datum, mjesto, gdje je pokopan?

KOSINA, OSCAR — 25 años — C — YUGOSLAVA/S.H.S. — «SEGKA» — COLONO

Cordialmente,
David Defranceski

Narrow the Brinje question: Josip Kalanj × Rozalija Perković, 1840-1865, and whether Brinje's registers before 1888 survive and where

What it settles
The filmed Brinje registers (1888-1899) have now been read end to end, all three volumes: Kalanj and Borić households are there, and no Kalanj × Perković marriage and no Perković death. The marriage can only be in a volume before 1888, so the question is whether those survive.

DRAFT — NOT SENT. 9 October 2026. A follow-up to the letter of 13 September
(requests/sent/EMAIL-gospic.txt), which Marija Fajdić acknowledged on 14 September.

To: Državni arhiv u Gospiću — zahtjevi@arhiv-gospic.hr

archive's own contact page before sending.
Subject: Dopuna zahtjeva od 13. rujna 2026. — Brinje prije 1888.

David Defranceski

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Ms Fajdić,

Thank you for confirming on 14 September that my request was received and queued.
I am not asking you to hurry it. I am writing to NARROW the first of its three
questions, because since then I have read everything on that question that I can
reach, and I now know where the entry is not.

WHAT I HAVE READ SINCE. The FamilySearch films of the Brinje registers
(Hrvatski državni arhiv) cover births and marriages 1888-1899 and deaths
1888-1899. I have now read every page of all three volumes, looking for Kalanj,
Perković and Borić: about 500 people, 48 deaths among them. I found Kalanj and
Borić households in plenty and some Perković households and witnesses, but
**no marriage of a Kalanj to a Perković and no Perković death**, and no entry
that names Klenovica, Senj or America.

SO THE QUESTION IS NOW EXACTLY ONE YEAR-RANGE.

1a. The MARRIAGE of JOSIP (Josephus) KALANJ, born at Klenovica on 27 August
1826, and ROZALIJA PERKOVIĆ of Brinje, between about 1840 and 1865. It is
before the filmed registers begin in 1888, so it can only be in a Brinje
volume of those years.

1b. The BAPTISM of ROZALIJA PERKOVIĆ, roughly 1820-1835.

1c. A plain answer to a plain question: **do the Brinje registers before 1888
survive, and where are they?** If they are at the parish and not at your
archive, the name of the parish office would let me write there instead.

The other two questions of 13 September are unchanged: the Otočac baptisms for
Prozor 1875-1895, and the one-man-or-two question about Michael and Nicolaus
Žubrinić. If one volume is quicker to look into than another, I would take any
answer, including "this book does not survive" — I publish negatives as results.

I am glad to pay for copies or for an hour of an archivist's time.

With thanks,

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am researching the family of my grandmother, HEDVIGA "SEKA" BLAŽEVIĆ, born at
Senj on 3 August 1926 and died at Johannesburg in 2001. The work is published,
free and without advertising, at:

https://daviddef.github.io/TheBlazevic/

Everything you send would be published there in full, with your shelfmark, and
credited. I also publish my own errors — including, this month, the collapse of
my theory that an epidemic struck this family in 1845.

Three requests follow. Any one of them would be a real help; I do not expect all
three.

===========================================================================
1. BRINJE — the parish I have been ignoring for years
===========================================================================

This is the request I would choose if only one can be answered.

I have treated the KALANJ family as a Klenovica family throughout — I hold 216
Kalanj records, 119 of them at Klenovica. Their own baptismal entry says
otherwise, and I had read the line without acting on it. At the baptism of ANA
KALANJ, Klenovica house no. 22, 3 January 1864, the parents are entered as:

Josephus Kalanj et Rosalia nata Perković ejus uxor,
BRINJENSIS PAROCHIAE RURICOLAE

— country people of the parish of BRINJE. My own records independently place
Rozalija Perković at Brinje, and hold a JURE BORIĆ of Brinje whose daughter Ana
(b. 12 February 1885, Brinje) married a PAPIĆ of Senj.

So three of my surnames — Kalanj, Perković and Borić — meet at Brinje, and I
have never opened a single page of that register.

1a. The MARRIAGE of JOSIP (Josephus) KALANJ, born 27 August 1826 at
Klenovica, to ROZALIJA PERKOVIĆ of Brinje — roughly 1840-1865. She died
25 September 1917. This entry would name her household, and it is the one
I want most.

1b. The BAPTISM of ROZALIJA PERKOVIĆ herself, roughly 1820-1835.

1c. Any decade of the Brinje registers, 1850-1890, in which KALANJ, PERKOVIĆ
and BORIĆ appear together — with HOUSE NUMBERS if the book gives them.
House numbers have done more for this research than names have.

===========================================================================
2. OTOČAC — the baptisms for PROZOR, 1875-1895
===========================================================================

I hold the household at PROZOR house no. 50 in detail: Michael Žubrinić, born
1826, and his seven children, Nikola 1858, Kata 1860, Georgius 1863, Magdalena
1865, Mate 1867, Ivan 1870, Franjo 1874.

And then my record stops. I have NOT ONE Žubrinić born at Prozor between 1875
and 1900.

American passenger manifests document exactly that missing generation leaving
Prozor, and name their fathers:

Eva Žubrinić b. 1880 sailed 1907 from Fiume
Nikola b. 1886 sailed 1911 father given as SANDRO Žubrinić
Anton b. 1891 sailed 1911 father given as MARCO Žubrinić
Miko b. 1893 sailed 1910 father given as IVAN Žubrinić
Mate b. 1867 sailed 1911 (this is the Mate born 1867 above)

Only one of those three fathers — Ivan — appears anywhere in my records. So
Prozor held at least two more Žubrinić households than I know of.

2a. The OTOČAC BAPTISMS covering PROZOR, 1875-1895. One volume, one village,
twenty years — and it would restore an entire generation at once.

2b. One entry I can give you an exact date for. A naturalisation petition
sworn at Brooklyn, New York, in 1939 gives IVAN ŽUBRINIĆ, BORN 30 JUNE
1888 AT OTOČAC. That is a sworn date, not a ship's estimate, so his
baptism should be in your register on that day. It would name his
parents. He is NOT the Ivan born 16 August 1887 at Otočac whom I already
hold.

===========================================================================
3. OTOČAC / ŠUMEĆICA — one man or two?
===========================================================================

My record gives one couple, MICHAËL ŽUBRINIĆ and MARIA née OREŠKOVIĆ, two sons
forty-six years apart:

Nicolaus, baptised 24 January 1834 — filius legitimus, Confiniarius ex Pago
Shumechicza No. 24, son of Michaël Xubrinich et Maria uxor ejus nata
Oreskovich

Nikola, born 23 August 1880 — named at his own marriage (Senj, 3 July 1910)
as son of the late Mate Žubrinić and Marija rodj. Orešković

Either one man married two women both called Maria, or — far likelier — there
were two men of the same name a generation apart and I have merged them.

3a. A MARRIAGE of a Michaël/Mate Žubrinić to a Maria Orešković at Otočac
BEFORE 1834, and a second such marriage roughly 1855-1870. If only one
exists, the merge is real but differently shaped.

3b. Any decade of the OTOČAC DEATH REGISTER between 1830 and 1860. I have
six people carrying the bare year "1845" with no day, month, place or
source, and I need to know when they actually died.

3c. If any STATUS ANIMARUM volume survives for Otočac or Šumećica, a
household page would answer more than any single entry — it lists a man,
his wife and his living children in one line of sight. I know these books
were kept in the region: a page of one from Our Lady of the Snow, Krivi
Put, running 1897-1939, survives in my own family papers.

Villages and house numbers already known to me, so any search can be narrow:
Šumećica 2 and 24 · Prozor 46, 50 and 245 · Dubrava 29 · Klenovica 22 and 23.

Thank you for your time.

I am researching the family of my grandmother, HEDVIGA "SEKA" BLAŽEVIĆ, born at
Senj on 3 August 1926 and died at Johannesburg in 2001. Her family were of this
parish for as far back as I can see: Papić, Blažević, Vukelić, Tomljanović,
Bezjak and Rogić — the surnames on the stones around their own.

The work is published, free and without advertising, at:

https://daviddef.github.io/TheBlazevic/

Anything you send would be published there in full and credited.

The filmed copies of the Senj registers (Hrvatski državni arhiv, through
FamilySearch) stop at **1894 for baptisms** and **1907 for deaths**. I have read
those films — fifteen pages of the marriage book at full resolution, and the
whole of the year 1888 end to end. **Everything below falls after the films
stop**, which is why I am writing to the parish.

===========================================================================
1. Three deaths, and for the first one I can give you the page and the line
===========================================================================

1a. MILKA LUCIJA PAPIĆ (married Blažević), born Senj 9 October 1886,
died 1971.
Her baptismal entry — Senj births, str. 122, 1886 — carries an
annotation added by a registrar in **1971** citing her death entry at
**page 280, line 37**. Someone in this office closed that loop
eighty-five years later and left the reference behind. I would like the
entry it points to.

1b. ZVONIMIR MATEJ VUKELIĆ, born 13 January 1883, her first husband.
Married to her in this church on **4 November 1907** (Senj marriages,
p. 294, no. 30). He died in **1915**, leaving her a widow at twenty-eight
with a daughter of eight and a son of two. I know nothing else about him
— not the day, not the cause, not his trade.

1c. TEREZA BLAŽEVIĆ née ŽUBRINIĆ, born Otočac 29 November 1867, died at
Senj in **1931**. She was my great-great-grandmother.

===========================================================================
2. Two sisters recorded eighteen days apart, in January and February 1895
===========================================================================

The tree I inherited gives two daughters of the same Papić household born
**eighteen days apart** — which cannot be. Both fall in **January and February
1895**, and **the filmed baptismal register stops at 1894**, one year short.

2a. The BAPTISMS in the Senj register for JANUARY and FEBRUARY 1895 —
or simply a note of which of the two dates the register actually
carries.

===========================================================================
3. A question about this parish's own practice
===========================================================================

Reading the Senj baptisms and marriages I noticed something I cannot explain:
**Senj entries record no house number at all**, where the village books around
it — Krmpote, Krivi Put, Selce, Otočac — give one without hesitation.

3a. Does a STATUS ANIMARUM (stanje duša) survive for Senj? And were Senj
households numbered at all, the number simply not carried into the
registers?

I am not asking blind: I have just read the Karlobag status animarum right
through, and a page of a Krivi Put one, captioned "Our Lady of the Snow", runs
1897 to 1939 in my own family papers. So the books were kept in these parishes.

Thank you for your time, and for keeping these books.

I am researching the family of my grandmother, HEDVIGA "SEKA" BLAŽEVIĆ, born at

free and without advertising, at:

https://daviddef.github.io/TheBlazevic/

Anything you send would be published there in full, with your shelfmark, and
credited. A negative result is worth having too, and I record those as results.

I have written separately to Gospić about the Otočac and Brinje parishes. The
three requests below are the ones that fall to Senj and Rijeka.

===========================================================================
1. SV. JAKOV KRMPOTE — the one link nothing states
===========================================================================

The Senj death register for 1907 (p. 225, entry 60) gives the birthplace of
TOMA BLAŽEVIĆ, nadničar, as the parish of SV. JAKOV KRMPOTE. That is the book
covering Smokvica Krmpotska, and it should hold every Blažević generation above
him.

Everything above JURAJ "JURKO" BLAŽEVIĆ — five further generations, back to a
Mateša Blažević born about 1750 — hangs on a link no document yet states. Juraj
is named as a parent by two separate Senj marriage registers (1919 and 1920) and
is placed at Smokvica house 114 in 1895. That is a strong circumstantial case. It
is not a sentence naming his father.

1a. The BAPTISM of JURAJ / JURKO BLAŽEVIĆ, Sv. Jakov Krmpote, most likely
1855-1870. This names his father outright.

1b. His MARRIAGE to TEREZA ŽUBRINIĆ (b. 29 November 1867, Otočac), most
likely 1885-1892, at Krmpote, Senj or Otočac. Names both fathers.

1c. His DEATH, Krmpote or Senj, before December 1920 — his son's marriage
entry of that month annotates him as dead.

What I already hold, so the search can be narrow: Juraj is a seljak, living at
SMOKVICA HOUSE 114 in 1895, entered there as "Jurko Blažević i Tereza rođ.
Žubrinić, selj." His children baptised in the parish are Ljubomir (b. Rijeka,
1 March 1892), Anka (1893), Marijan (b. 12 April 1895, entry 26, p. 168) and
Ruža (1897).

House 114 is a zadruga — three nuclear families of the descendants of Ilija
Blažević share the number across thirteen years: Toma Blažević and Terezija
Pećanić (1882, 1884), Pavao Blažević and Marija Tomljanović (1890), and Juraj
himself (1895).

===========================================================================
2. SENJ, 1915 — the death of ZVONIMIR VUKELIĆ
===========================================================================

ZVONIMIR MATEJ VUKELIĆ, born 13 January 1883, was the first husband of MILKA
LUCIJA PAPIĆ (b. Senj, 9 October 1886) — my great-grandmother. He died in 1915
and left her a widow at twenty-eight, with a daughter of eight and a son of two,
five years before she married Ljubomir Blažević on 8 December 1920.

I know nothing else about him at all.

2a. The SENJ DEATH REGISTER for 1915, for Zvonimir Vukelić — the date, the
cause, his occupation and his age.

Their MARRIAGE I already hold: Senj marriages p. 294, no. 30, 4 November 1907.
So the death falls between November 1907 and December 1920, and the family
account puts it in 1915. If 1915 yields nothing, that bracket is the range.

===========================================================================
3. A household that stood godparent twice and is in no tree
===========================================================================

Reading the godparent column of the Sv. Jakov Krmpote baptisms — a column I had
never read — turned up JANDRE BUTORAC and his wife MARIJA standing twice for
children of Toma Blažević at Smokvica house 114:

25 July 1882 Ivan Blažević — "Pere ?ećanić i Marija Butorac, supruga
Jandrina"
25 October 1884 Antonija "Tonka" Blažević — "Jandre i Marija Butorac,
supruzi, rimo-kat. seljaci"

Standing twice, two years apart, is a standing relationship between two
households — and Tonka is a direct ancestor of mine. Neither Jandre nor Marija
exists anywhere in my records.

3a. The MARRIAGE of a JANDRE (Andrija) BUTORAC at Sv. Jakov Krmpote, roughly
1870-1882 — with the HOUSE NUMBER of his household. If it sits near 114
the tie is neighbourhood; if it sits far off, it is much more likely kin.

3b. In the 1882 entry above, the godfather's surname is illegible in my copy —
it reads "Pere ?ećanić". If it is PEĆANIĆ he is the child's mother's own
kin. I would rather be told what the register says than guess.

===========================================================================
And one class of book, if any survives
===========================================================================

A STATUS ANIMARUM for Krivi Put, Sv. Jakov Krmpote, Smokvica Krmpotska or Senj
itself would answer more than several individual entries, because it lists a
household together.

I am not asking blind: a page of one survives in my own family papers, captioned
"Our Lady of the Snow, Krivi Put", running 1897 to 1939, with each person entered
as ž. (wife), s. (son), k. (daughter) or i. (child of) beneath the head of the
household. So the books were kept in these parishes.

For Senj there is a specific question attached. I have read Senj baptisms and
marriages and found that this town's entries record NO HOUSE NUMBER at all,
where the village books give one without hesitation. A Senj status animarum
would tell me whether the households were numbered and simply not carried into
the registers.

Thank you for your time.

Anything you send would be published there in full, with your shelfmark, and

your Senj colleague's reply is already published as one.

I have read the filmed registers (HDA copies, via FamilySearch) end to end where
they exist. Every request below is for something those films do NOT cover, and I
say in each case exactly where the film stops. I am not asking you to repeat work
I can do myself.

===========================================================================
1. RIJEKA, 1892 — a birth in your own city that I have never been able to place
===========================================================================

LJUBOMIR "LJUBO" BLAŽEVIĆ, my great-grandfather, was born on 1 MARCH 1892 at
RIJEKA. He married Milka Papić at Senj on 8 December 1920 (Senj marriages,
p. 366, entry 41) and died at Senj in 1966.

His parents were JURAJ "JURKO" BLAŽEVIĆ, a seljak of SMOKVICA KRMPOTSKA house
114, and TEREZA née ŽUBRINIĆ, born at Otočac on 29 November 1867. Their other
children were all baptised in the parish of Sv. Jakov Krmpote — Anka (1893),
Marijan (12 April 1895) and Ruža (1897).

1a. The BAPTISMAL ENTRY for Ljubomir Blažević, Rijeka, 1 March 1892 —
in whichever Rijeka parish it falls.

This is the one I would most like. **A Krmpote peasant household had a child in
Rijeka in 1892 and then went home** — the next child is baptised back at Krmpote
in 1893. The entry would give the address, and the address would explain why.

**Since drafting this I have found why I could not place it, and it narrows the
request considerably.** The filmed copy of the Rijeka parish registers (HDA,
through FamilySearch, catalogue koha:722509) runs from 1594 to 1920, and I have
now gone through its own list of volumes. The baptisms run:

... Rodjeni 1880-1886 · 1886-1890 · 1890-1891 · 1900-1901 ...

**There is no 1892-1899 baptismal volume on the film**, and the alphabetical
Kazalo skips the same span: it covers 1800-1889, then resumes at 1895-1902.
So Ljubomir's entry falls into a gap twice over, by image and by index.

**The volume itself must exist. It is simply not filmed** — which is exactly the
case where the archive can help and the film cannot. If you hold, or can say who
holds, the Rijeka baptismal register covering **1 March 1892**, that single entry
is the thing I have been unable to reach by any other route.

===========================================================================
2. SENJ — three deaths, all after the filmed register stops in 1907
===========================================================================

The Senj death register on film runs 1859-1907. All three of these fall after it.

2a. MILKA LUCIJA PAPIĆ, born Senj 9 October 1886, died 1971.
**I can give you the page and the line.** Her baptismal entry (Senj
births, str. 122, 1886) carries a registrar's annotation added in 1971
citing her death entry at **page 280, line 37**. A clerk closed that loop
eighty-five years later and left the reference behind.

2b. ZVONIMIR MATEJ VUKELIĆ, born 13 January 1883, Milka's first husband.
He died in 1915 and left her a widow at twenty-eight. Their marriage I
hold: Senj marriages p. 294, no. 30, 4 November 1907. So the death falls
between November 1907 and December 1920, and the family account says 1915.
I know nothing else about him at all — not the cause, not the day.

2c. TEREZA BLAŽEVIĆ née ŽUBRINIĆ, born Otočac 29 November 1867, died at
SENJ in 1931.

===========================================================================
3. SV. JAKOV KRMPOTE — where the film is sixty-four years short
===========================================================================

The FamilySearch waypoint for Krmpote-Vodice is catalogued "Births 1815-1896".
**The film itself begins in 1879**: image 10 is page 2 and reads Godine 1879.
I checked this leaf by leaf. Sixty-four catalogued years are not behind the
label, and they are the years I need.

3a. The BAPTISM of JURAJ / JURKO BLAŽEVIĆ, Sv. Jakov Krmpote, most likely
1855-1870 — before the film begins. This names his father outright.

Everything above Juraj — five further generations, back to a Mateša Blažević
born about 1750 — hangs on a link no document yet states. He is named as a
parent by two Senj marriage registers (1919, 1920) and placed at Smokvica house
114 in 1895. That is a strong circumstantial case. It is not a sentence naming
his father.

3b. His MARRIAGE to TEREZA ŽUBRINIĆ, before March 1892.
**The Krmpote waypoint has no marriage register at all**, and I have now
read the WHOLE of 1888 in the Senj marriage book — all thirty-nine
entries, 12 January to 15 November — and they are not in it.
**I have since also read the Rijeka marriage register to the end of the
filmed volume.** It is catalogued *Vjenčani 1866-1891*, and its last
entry is **9 August 1891**; I read every entry from April to that date,
about a hundred and twenty of them, and there is no Blažević and no
Žubrinić among them. So if they married at Rijeka it was after 9 August
1891 — in the same unfilmed span as their son's baptism. Otherwise the
marriage is at Krmpote, at Otočac, or somewhere I have not thought of.

3c. His DEATH, Krmpote or Senj, before December 1920 — his son's marriage
entry of that month annotates him as dead.

===========================================================================
4. A class of book, if any survives
===========================================================================

A STATUS ANIMARUM for SV. JAKOV KRMPOTE, KRIVI PUT, SMOKVICA KRMPOTSKA or SENJ
would answer more than several single entries, because it lists a household
together with dates of birth.

I am not asking blind. A page of one survives in my own family papers, captioned
"Our Lady of the Snow, Krivi Put", running 1897 to 1939. And I have just read the
Karlobag status animarum (HDA 715) right through, which shows what these books
give: a date of birth to the day for every soul in the house, and a communion
column for every year.

Juraj Blažević's baptism, marriage and death; the Butorac household; a status animarum

Župni ured Sv. Jakov Krmpote (administered from Ledenice)

What it settles
Sent 15 September; answered: the registers left the parish (handed to the Rijeka archdiocese), which is what the draft to the archdiocese follows up.
Draft

urede uputio me Državni arhiv u Rijeci, Ispostava u Senju, 14. rujna 2026.

David Defranceski

I am researching the family of my grandmother, HEDVIGA "SEKA" BLAŽEVIĆ, born at
Senj in 1926. Her father's people were **Blaževići of SMOKVICA KRMPOTSKA, house
114** — a zadruga, three households of the descendants of Ilija Blažević sharing
the one number across thirteen years of your baptismal register.

The work is published, free and without advertising, at:

https://daviddef.github.io/TheBlazevic/

Anything you send would be published there in full and credited. A negative
answer is worth having too, and I publish those as results.

**Why I am writing to the parish and not only to the archive.** The filmed copy
of your baptismal register (Hrvatski državni arhiv, through FamilySearch) is
catalogued *1815-1896*. **The film itself begins in 1879** — image 10 is page 2
and reads *Godine 1879*. I checked it leaf by leaf. Sixty-four catalogued years
are not behind that label. And **no marriage register for this parish is filmed
at all.**

===========================================================================
1. The one link no document states
===========================================================================

JURAJ "JURKO" BLAŽEVIĆ, a *seljak* of Smokvica house 114, is entered in your
register in 1895 as *"Jurko Blažević i Tereza rođ. Žubrinić, selj."* — at the
baptism of their son Marijan, 12 April 1895, entry 26, page 168. His other
children in your parish are Anka (1893) and Ruža (1897); the eldest, Ljubomir,
was born at Rijeka on 1 March 1892.

**Everything above Juraj — five further generations, back to a Mateša Blažević
born about 1750 — rests on a link nothing yet states.**

1a. His BAPTISM, most likely **1855-1870** — before the film begins.
This names his father outright, and it is the single entry I most want.

1b. His MARRIAGE to TEREZA ŽUBRINIĆ (born Otočac, 29 November 1867),
about **1888**. There is no filmed marriage register for the parish,
and I have read the whole of 1888 in the Senj marriage book — all
thirty-nine entries — and they are not in it.

1c. His DEATH, before December 1920 — his son's marriage entry of that
month annotates him as already dead.

===========================================================================
2. A household that stood godparent twice and is in no tree
===========================================================================

Reading the godparent column of your baptisms — a column I had never read — I
found JANDRE (Andrija) BUTORAC and his wife MARIJA standing twice for children
of Toma Blažević at Smokvica 114:

25 July 1882 Ivan Blažević — "Pere ?ećanić i Marija Butorac,
supruga Jandrina"
25 October 1884 Antonija "Tonka" Blažević — "Jandre i Marija Butorac,
supruzi, rimo-kat. seljaci"

Standing twice, two years apart, is a standing relationship between two
households — and Tonka is my direct ancestor. Neither Jandre nor Marija exists
anywhere in my records.

2a. The MARRIAGE of a JANDRE (Andrija) BUTORAC, roughly 1870-1882, with the
HOUSE NUMBER of his household. If it sits near 114 the tie is
neighbourhood; if it sits far off, it is much more likely kin.

2b. **This one I have since answered myself and record it only so that you
know I am not asking twice.** I have now read the 1882 entry at full
resolution: it is **"Pere Pećanić"**, so the godfather is the child's
mother's own kin, and the household is entered as **Smokvica kbroj 114**.

2c. **A date I cannot reconcile, and one line would settle it.** For Tonka's
baptism I have **25 October 1884** from my own earlier reading, but the
FamilySearch index of your register gives **27 November 1884**. One of
the two is wrong. Whichever date the register itself carries is the one
I will publish.

===========================================================================
3. A status animarum, if one survives
===========================================================================

3a. A STATUS ANIMARUM (stanje duša) for Sv. Jakov Krmpote or Smokvica
Krmpotska would answer more than several single entries, because it
lists a household together with dates of birth.

I am not asking blind: I have just read the Karlobag status animarum right
through, and it gives a date of birth to the day for every soul in the house.
A page of a Krivi Put one, captioned "Our Lady of the Snow", 1897 to 1939,
survives in my own family papers. So the books were kept in these parishes.

===========================================================================
And a note about Ledenice, since I am writing there
===========================================================================

Ledenice and Klenovica are in this family's story too. The Kalanj household of
**Klenovica N° 22** appears in my records from 1864, and I have read a Karlobag
marriage of 1807 in which a bride is married *"in Ledenik"*. If anything of
those names is easy to hand I would be glad of it — but the three requests above
are the ones that matter.

Thank you for your time, and for keeping these books.

Photographs only someone there can take

This archive has been built from a family tree, a media library and about thirty pages of parish register read on a screen. Nobody involved in it has stood in any of these places. A phone is enough for all of it; none of this needs an appointment, and most of it needs no permission.

Photograph the whole thing and then the detail. A stone shot only close up cannot be placed in its row; a stone shot only wide cannot be read. And photograph the ones that look like nothing — a wrong house number is worth knowing too.

Go here first

Senj — the cemetery at sv. Vid

  • The Blažević grave: Ljubomir 1892–1966, Milka 1886–1971, Oto 1923–1945, Mario 1933–1984. Photograph the whole stone and each line close.
  • Tereza Žubrinić's stone, 1867–1931, restored by the Kosina family in 1991, with the wooden cross for vlč. Antun Kosina 1921–2003 standing against it.
  • Pavao and Anka Kosina's grave — his stone reads Nevina žrtva zračnog napadaja na Senj, an innocent victim of the air raid.

Toma Blažević was buried here on 28 July 1907 and Stanko Papić on 4 June 1903. Neither grave has been looked for. A cemetery register or a surviving stone would place them.

Smokvica Krmpotska — house 114

  • The house itself, if it still stands, and the number if it is still on it.
  • The neighbouring numbers, 112 and 116, so the run can be placed on the ground.
  • Anything carved or dated on the building.

Six documented years — 1838, 1882, 1884, 1888, 1890, 1895 — hold Toma's children, Pavao's children, Jurko's children and two different men called Ivo Blažević. It is the zadruga the whole of question 1b turns on, and nobody in this archive has seen it.

Klenovica and Povile — house 22

  • The house, if it stands, and the number on it — in BOTH villages, because they may be the same building.
  • Whether Klenovica 22 and Povile 22 are one house, two houses, or one house the registers gave two village names.
  • The Kalanj graves in the Klenovica cemetery beyond the one already photographed (Lovro 1906–1965, Ana 1919–1971, Ivan 1942–1996, Marijan 1944–2009).

Sixty-seven published people are entered at house 22 between 1840 and 1890 — the largest single household in this archive, ahead of Smokvica 114 and Krivi Put 136. Eleven couples have children recorded under both village names, which is why it is thought to be one house. Nobody has stood in front of it.

Krivi Put — house 136

  • The house, and 113 and 129 if the numbers survive.
  • The church of the parish, and any war memorial.

Antonija Perpić was born at 136 in 1859 into a household the register calls Confiniarii. Three Prpić house numbers are known and none has been seen.

When you are passing

Crikvenica — the Hotel Therapia

  • The building, now the Kvarner Palace — the façade and, if they will let you in, the room that was the dining hall.
  • Any historic photograph the hotel keeps of its own interwar years.

Hedviga is remembered singing here. It is the only thing anyone has ever said about what she did, and the building is still standing — bought in 2013 and renamed. A photograph would turn a sentence of lore into something you can look at.

Senj — the tobacco factory

  • The building on Ul. Stjepana Radića 4, now a textile works.
  • Any plaque, date stone or surviving signage.

Milka supervised women rolling cigarettes here and Antonija Blažević held the same grade. Across ten register pages between 1909 and 1919, most young women marrying in Senj worked in it.

If you get that far

Otočac and Šumećica

  • Šumećica house 24, if the numbering survives.
  • The parish church at Otočac.
  • Prozor houses 50 and 245.

The 1834 baptism puts a Confiniarius household at Šumećica 24. The Žubrinići held five Frontier offices out of these villages.

Karlobag

  • The parish church.
  • Anything marking the town as a free royal city — the registers call it hujus Civitatis.

Four generations of Pilipići, Urodas, Smojvers and Gerkacs, with a Giustiniani standing godfather and a Baron von Holstein on the same page. The most socially distinct part of this descent.

And anything on paper

WhatWhy it matters here
Anything written on the back of a photographStudio stamps date and place a picture better than anything else here. Fifteen photographs on /faces have no caption but a camera filename.
Letters, in any languageNothing in this archive is in the family's own words. Not one letter.
Identity papers, passports, work booksA Yugoslav passport application would date the emigration that question 1f cannot.
Funeral cards and death noticesThey carry the date, the parish and often the surviving relatives, all three.

If you are holding a photograph and cannot say who is in it, that is worth as much — the contact sheet is fifteen pictures this archive cannot vouch for, and one conversation would close most of it.

Where a letter has been answered, the answer is on the work list and the search register. A draft's address is marked to be confirmed where this archive has not verified it; nothing here invents a street or an inbox.

A negative or a refused request is kept as a result, here and on the search register. The search register →
