The Lines of a Name

A surname is not a family. Wherever the registers show several households of one name, each gets a lane of its own, and a join between lanes is drawn dotted until a document makes it.

They are not one family, and nothing read so far says they were. A name like Uroda or Smojver turns up in three households at one town, in a dead man «of Šibenik», in a soldier's household at Drniš. So each gets a lane of its own. What is documented goes on the lane; a join between lanes is drawn dotted and says what it rests on; nothing is merged until a register joins it.

Uroda · Smojver · Pilipić · Bacchi

Uroda — six groups, one surname

Uroda

Six groups of one surname — three at Karlobag, one dead man of Šibenik, and a soldier's family at Drniš and another at Betina. Only the top lane is ours, and the joins between the others are drawn dotted because no document makes them.

Antonia 1718); a Joannes; the dead Dume of 1739 THE NAME AT DOLAC WITHOUT A BREAK 1687–1767 · FOUR HOUSEHOLDS BY 1692 · GEORGIUS (BAPTISED 10 OCT 1694 AT THE CATHEDRAL, SON OF DOMINICUS AND LUCIETTA; D. 17 AUG 1754) FATHER OF DOMINICUS · NO BAPTISM OF A GEORGIUS, DOMINICUS OR DUME IN ANY DOLAC BOOK 1685–1762 · NO LINK TO KARLOBAG The Šibenik Uroda → Georgius's father — At Šibenik the father is now found: Georgius (b. 6 Oct 1694, d. 17 Aug 1754) was the son of the Magister Dominicus and Lucietta Vroda of the Dolac parish, baptised at the cathedral. That Georgius died in 1754; Georgius Uroda of Karlobag (ahnentafel 108) was alive from 1763 to 1791, so he is not the Šibenik Georgius — he named his first son Dominicus in 1764, as the Šibenik Georgius did, which keeps the name pattern but proves nothing. Georgius Uroda of Karlobag (ahnentafel 108) named his first son Dominicus in 1764. At Šibenik a Dominicus Uroda, a master, is filius Magistri Georgii (4 Aug 1746) and filius qd. Georgij Vroda (13 Feb 1757) — a Magister Georgius, alive in 1746 and dead by 1757, and a Dominicus. If Georgius of Karlobag is a son of that Dominicus he is named for his grandfather and his first son for his father; that is a pattern in the names, not a document, and none of the three Dolac baptism books (1685–1762) holds a baptism of him. There was also a Magister Georgius Uroda at Šibenik, married, in 1738: the Georgius of Karlobag cannot be that man if he first fathered a child in 1764, but he could be a grandson or a namesake. The Šibenik Georgius died on 17 August 1754 (aged about 60), so he is not the Karlobag Georgius, who is alive from 1763 to 1791; and the Šibenik Georgius's son Dominicus has only daughters and an infant Paulus in the Dolac books, no Georgius Georgius's father Dume's sons — The dead Dume of Šibenik (d. before 1739) is the one Šibenik Uroda with a recorded child (the bride Simona of 1739); Franciscus, Georgius and Dominicus, masters of the same years, are candidates for his sons, but no register read says so — and the one father named at Šibenik is Georgius (1757), not Dume Dume's sons Dominicus Vroda (wife Ursula) · 1687 – 1693 — Godfather 19 Apr 1687 and 22 Feb 1693; Dominus Vrodich & Vrsula eius coniunx Jan 1689; father of Lucia (31 Jul 1692) — the earliest Uroda in any Šibenik register; an Aurelia of 17 Sep 1693 (mother Silvia [?]) is doubtful Dominicus Vroda (wife Ursula) 1687 – 1693 Magister Dominicus Vrodda (wife Lucietta [Lucia]) — parents of Georgius · 10 Oct 1694; 14 [Oct] 1696 — Baptised at the cathedral for the Dolac parish: Georgius (born 6 Oct 1694) and Simeon (1696), ex Coningibus Magistro Domco ac Lucia Vrodda. Lucia is very probably the Lucia, ux. q. Mag: Dominici Vrodda, aged about 77, who died on 21 Jun 1746 — so this is the elder Magister Dominicus. Whether he is the Dominicus × Ursula of 1687–93 (a second marriage?) is not shown Magister Dominicus Vrodda (wife Lucietta [Lucia]) — parents of Georgius 10 Oct 1694; 14 [Oct] 1696 Thomas Vrodich (wife Catarina) · 1687 – 1692 — Godfather's wife Catarina in Apr 1687 and 17 Sep 1692; a daughter Justina, old enough to be a godmother, 2 Aug 1692 Thomas Vrodich (wife Catarina) 1687 – 1692 Lucas Vrodi (wife Mariota) · 1692 – 1698 — Sons Antonius (6 Aug 1692) and Michael (13 Jul 1698) — the household of Simeon (1705) and Paulus Antonius (1710); a daughter Michaela baptised at the cathedral in Jan 1694 to Magister Lucas and Maria Vrodal (in no Dolac book) Lucas Vrodi (wife Mariota) 1692 – 1698 Paulus Vroda (wife Anastasia, later Stanislava [?]) · 1691 – 1695 — Godfather's wife Anastasia 2 Dec 1691; godfather with Stanislava [?] 24 Aug 1693; a Stanca Vroda godmother Jul 1695 Paulus Vroda (wife Anastasia, later Stanislava [?]) 1691 – 1695 Joannes and Ursula Vroda · 1703 – 1705 — Sons Paulus (28 Jan 1703) and Antonius (31 May 1705) baptised in the Dolac parish — the earliest Uroda household met in any Šibenik register Joannes and Ursula Vroda 1703 – 1705 Lucas Vrodich · 27 Oct 1705; 16 Jan 1710 — Sons Simeon (1705) and Paulus Antonius (1710) baptised in the Dolac parish Lucas Vrodich 27 Oct 1705; 16 Jan 1710 Thomas and Anastasia Vrodich · 14 May 1706 — Son Paulus baptised in the Dolac parish Thomas and Anastasia Vrodich 14 May 1706 Antonius Vroda (dead by 1701) and his son Lucas · 13 Nov 1701 — Lucas, filius qm Antonij Vroda, marries Francisca, daughter of the late Joannes Loveta — a father Antonius in the generation before the 1680s–90s households Antonius Vroda (dead by 1701) and his son Lucas 13 Nov 1701 Thomas Vrodich marries Anastasia · 8 Jan 1702 — Thomas Vrodich, widowed of Catarina (1687, 1692) or a namesake, marries Anastasia — the mother of Paulus, baptised 1706 Thomas Vrodich marries Anastasia 8 Jan 1702 Paulus Vrodich (dead by 1710) and his son Antonius · Oct 1710 — Antonius, filius qdm Pauli Vrodich, marries the widow Anna — Paulus is the Paulus Vroda of 1691–95 Paulus Vrodich (dead by 1710) and his son Antonius Oct 1710 Magister Antonius Vroda (wife Antonia) · 1718 – 1742 — Antonius, son of Lucas Vrodich, marries Antonia on 30 Oct 1718; daughters Marietta (buried 18 Jan 1742) and Dominica (about 13, buried 19 Jul 1742) are filia Magistri Antonij Vroda Magister Antonius Vroda (wife Antonia) 1718 – 1742 Franciscus Vrodich [Urode] (wife Anna, later a Lucia?) · 1710 – 1721 — Son Paulus (23 Oct 1710), daughter Stanislava (21 Nov 1712) and son Franciscus Antonius (born 3 [Oct] 1721, filius Francisci Urode et Annae) by Anna; daughter SIMONA (21 Oct 1715) by a Lucia [?] — the first Franciscus; the master Franciscus of 1725–38 (dead by 1742) is this man or his namesake son Franciscus Vrodich [Urode] (wife Anna, later a Lucia?) 1710 – 1721 Georgius Urodich · 1715? – 1721 — Godfather Georgius Urodich at Dolac baptisms on 28 Jan 1720 and 27 Dec 1721, perhaps already D. Godfather Georgius Urodich at Dolac 28 Jan 1720 and 27 Dec 1721 (perhaps already 28 Oct 1715); a master, already married, in 1738 (uxor Mri Georgij Vroda; his wife is not named Maria); ALIVE on 4 Aug 1746, when Dominico Vrodda, filio Magistri Georgii is a witness; and DEAD by 13 Feb 1757, when his son Dominicus is called filius qd. Hover or tab any dot and it says what the register behind it says; click again to go there. The top lane is the one this archive descends from. The dotted curves are candidate joins between lanes, on evidence short of a document — questions, not findings. A dotted end-point is a hope, not a link.
One spelling is not a search. The registers write Uroda, urode, vrode, Urodan, Urada; the index reads one Karlobag father as Sime, spells Dume's children Urode (so a search for Uroda misses them), and reads one Drniš father four ways (Janpao, Ganpas, Pompio, Tomaso) where the pages say Pampao and Pompeo. At Karlobag in 1734 a priest writes «Dume urode alliti Kovaca» — a by-name, a smith's — and before the 1730s the book has no Uroda at all, so a baptism of the man himself would sit under another surname. See The Second Name.

  14. Georgius Urodich · 1715? – 1721 — Godfather «Georgius Urodich» at Dolac baptisms on 28 Jan 1720 and 27 Dec 1721, perhaps already «D. Georgius Vrodi[ch?]» on 28 Oct 1715 and the Magister Georgius of 1738 — one man or several is not shown
  15. Dume of Šibenik · before 1739 — Dume Uroda «od Šibenika» — Dalmatia — nothing else is known of him
  16. Simona marries · 7 Jun 1739 — Martin Svjata marries Simona, «pokoi[nog] Dume urode od Šibenika» — daughter of the late Dume Uroda of Šibenik
  17. Magister Franciscus Uroda · 19 Mar 1725 – 15 Nov 1738 — Godfather («Mr / Dñ Francus Vroda», nearly always beside an Angela Julioli) at Dolac baptisms on 19 Mar 1725, 6 Jul and 26 Oct 1728, 7 Jan, 23 Aug and 12 Sep 1729 and 12 Feb 1730, and again 25 Apr 1733, 30 Jan 1735 and, as «Magister», 12 Oct 1738. Dead by 6 May 1742, when his daughter Antonia, wife of a Joannes Biliznich, is called «filia q. Francisci Vrodda de hac Parochia S. Marci» — and dead on 15 Nov 1738 («Magister Franciscus Vroda», buried at the Holy Trinity)
  18. Georgius Uroda (Magister; born 6 Oct 1694, died 17 Aug 1754) · 1715? – 17 Aug 1754 — **Baptised in the cathedral on 10 Oct 1694, «ex Coniugibus Dominico et Lucietta Vroda»** — the age at death, «60», fits to the month. Godfather «Georgius Urodich» at Dolac 28 Jan 1720 and 27 Dec 1721 (perhaps already 28 Oct 1715); a master, already married, in 1738 («uxor Mri Georgij Vroda»; his wife is not named Maria); ALIVE on 4 Aug 1746, when «Dominico Vrodda, filio Magistri Georgii» is a witness; and DEAD by 13 Feb 1757, when his son Dominicus is called «filius qd. Georgij Vroda»; very probably the «Dominus Georgius Vroda aetatis annorum 60» who died on 17 Aug 1754 and was buried at S. Dominic; a daughter Magdalena, «filia Magistri Georgii Vrode», was buried 29 Oct 1740
  19. Magister Dominicus Uroda (son of the late Georgius) · 27 Jan 1726 [?]; 1741 – 3 Jun 1767 — A «Mr. Domcus [Dominicus?] Vroda» is godfather at Dolac on 27 Jan 1726; godfather («Magister Dominicus Vroda») 1 Jan and 23 Apr 1741; father, with a wife FLORIA, of Lucia (born 12 Dec 1744) and Vittoria (born 10 May 1745); godfather 27 Jun 1749, 20 Mar 1752 and 6 Jul 1755; on 4 Aug 1746 a witness «Dominicus Vrodda, filius Magistri Georgii»; on 13 Feb 1757 «Dominicus filius qd. Georgij Vroda»; on 11 Sep 1757 «Dominicus Vroda Pictor» (a painter); witness at Dolac marriages 11 Jan 1756, 11 Sep 1759 and 10 Aug 1762 and at the cathedral 3 Jun 1767. Two masters of the name seem to be mixed here: a Lucia «ux. q. Mag. Dominici Vrodda», aged about 77, dies on 21 Jun 1746, so an ELDER Magister Dominicus was dead by then; the younger, son of Georgius, has an infant son Paulus buried 7 Jan 1744 — and at the cathedral: Joseph Joannes (born 16 Dec 1739, ceremonies 7 Jun 1740) and Anna (born May 1741; 6 Aug 1741), «filius/filia Magistri Dominici et Florae Vroda», in no Dolac book

→ Georgius's father?: **At Šibenik the father is now found: Georgius (b. 6 Oct 1694, d. 17 Aug 1754) was the son of the Magister Dominicus and Lucietta Vroda of the Dolac parish, baptised at the cathedral.** That Georgius died in 1754; Georgius Uroda of Karlobag (ahnentafel 108) was alive from 1763 to 1791, so he is not the Šibenik Georgius — he named his first son Dominicus in 1764, as the Šibenik Georgius did, which keeps the name pattern but proves nothing. Georgius Uroda of Karlobag (ahnentafel 108) named his first son Dominicus in 1764. At Šibenik a Dominicus Uroda, a master, is «filius Magistri Georgii» (4 Aug 1746) and «filius qd. Georgij Vroda» (13 Feb 1757) — a Magister Georgius, alive in 1746 and dead by 1757, and a Dominicus. The Šibenik Georgius died on 17 August 1754 (aged about 60), so he is not the Karlobag Georgius, who is alive from 1763 to 1791; and the Šibenik Georgius's son Dominicus has only daughters and an infant Paulus in the Dolac books, no Georgius

→ Dume's sons?: The dead Dume of Šibenik (d. before 1739) is the one Šibenik Uroda with a recorded child (the bride Simona of 1739); Franciscus, Georgius and Dominicus, masters of the same years, are candidates for his sons, but no register read says so — and the one father named at Šibenik is «Georgius» (1757), not Dume

What this name still owes. For Uroda that is: Dume's baptism (likely under the by-name Kovač, in the 1700s), the marriage of Georgius and Maria (not in Karlobag's marriage book 1736–1804, not in the index under any «Urod*» spelling, not in the Šibenik cathedral marriage book 1752–1770 nor the Dolac parish marriage book 1752–1764, both read entry by entry; perhaps Varoš before 1764, whose book begins only that year, or a place not filmed), Maria's maiden name (Barach, of Šibenik, is the best candidate — her first child's godfather), and the Šibenik baptisms themselves: all three Dolac baptism books (1685–1700, 1701–1731 and 1731–1762) are now read through — no baptism of a Georgius, Dominicus or Dume Uroda, but a Dominicus «son of Magister Georgius» (1746, the Dolac marriage book) and «son of the late Georgius» (1757); the Dolac marriage book 1701–1764 is read to its end (no marriage of Georgius, Dominicus or Dume); the Dolac deaths book is read for September 1738 – March 1756 (Franciscus died 15 Nov 1738) (Georgius died 17 August 1754; a Magister Antonius with daughters buried 1742; a Lucia, widow of a Magister Dominicus, 1746) but not for 1738–1740, 1754–1757 or before 1738; the cathedral births are read only as a margin scan for 1693–1702 (which found Georgius's own baptism, 6 Oct 1694, and his brother Simeon) and 1737–1744 (which found two more children of Dominicus and Flora); still to read are the cathedral births 1702–1737 and after 1740 and before 1693, and the Varoš births (1711–1767), where the baptism of a Georgius or a Dominicus, or of a «Georgius filius Dominici», would say whose son Georgius of Karlobag is (the Betina and Drniš ones have been opened and are other families).
Smojver — Karlobag and Cesarica

Smojver

At Karlobag the name is written in two ways, with and without the by-name «Vukić», and a second large body of the exact spelling sits at Cesarica. Only the Vukić line is ours; the others are drawn apart until a register joins them.

Why two lanes at Karlobag. The tree's Smojver are called Vukić in the marriage of 1774 and the baptism of 1781 («Smojver Vukich»), and the 1776 death says «called Vukcich». The Paulus Smojver who baptises in 1763 is written without it. A by-name marks which house of a surname is meant (see The Second Name), so the two are kept apart until something says Paulus is a Vukić too.

Why only one lane. The index has well over a thousand lines of the name, but every cluster outside Karlobag is a body of index lines, not a family anyone has followed. They are listed below the figure as not yet on any lane rather than drawn as families: a lane is a household the registers show, and these have not been shown.

What this name still owes. For Pilipić that is: the captain's baptism (not at Karlobag: the index has no Pilipić baptism there before 1739, and 1700–1730 holds none under any spelling — so probably at Kastav or Rijeka, where two Jacobus Pilepich of 1705 and 1708 are the candidates), whether the Jakov of 1739 is he, and a second family of the name at Karlobag before anyone is called a stranger to it.
Bacchi — Karlobag, Pag, Drniš

Bacchi

A rare name, and the one with the best lead on this site: a Caietanus Bachi baptised at Pag in 1728, the son of a patrician, who may be the Caetanus who married at Karlobag in 1753.

What the 1728 page does and does not say. It names a child Caietanus Antonius ac Gregorius, born 12 March 1728, to Dno Angelo Bachi, Patricio and Dna Oliva, at Pag. On the Karlobag side everything is circumstance — the rare name, the age, a daughter called Oliva like the Pag mother. And the tree's Angelo (ahnentafel 428) is not evidence: he and his Catharina come only from a different baptism, of 12 January 1779, of a Caetanus Antonius at Karlobag whose godmother is Maria Uroda — a second Bachi household in the town, which the tree has wrongly welded onto the elder Caetanus. So the Pag baptism is a candidate, strong and unproved, and the 1779 household a separate lane.

What this name still owes. For Bacchi that is: a Karlobag entry that names Caetanus's father or his town (the marriage of 1753 does not), his death before October 1760 (Karlobag's death book begins in 1774, so that is not filmed), and the Pag baptisms of his siblings read from the pages, not the index.
What each lane owes. A lane carries three things: what is documented, what is inferred, and what would have to be found to join it to another. The full list is on the work list. A surname with no second family yet — Gerkacs at Karlobag, Luckinić — gets a lane the day a second family of the name is met, not before.
