Julius Defranceschi
A complete officer's career, transcribed from 181 entries across 79 volumes of the Austro-Hungarian navy lists. Twenty-four years, from a first-year cadet at the naval academy to a name still on the active list four months before the empire ended. He is not proved kin to this family — and everything below is documented to the page.
This archive found him on 13 September 2026, on the day it first opened Hungaricana. He was the largest single thing in it: 196 hits on one man, and nobody had ever looked.
The navy lists are the best serial source a family historian can be handed. They were printed two to four times a year, they name every officer, and they say where each one was standing. Run them end to end and a life falls out of them — which is what follows.
Read the warning first. Nothing here proves that Julius belongs to the Kvarner households on this site. What is known is that he is of the name, born in the right decade, and serving in the navy of the empire whose Royal Hungarian port captain on that coast was also a Defranceschi. That is a strong circumstantial setting and it is not a descent. His birthplace is not given in any of the 181 entries, and until it is, he stands on this site as documented and unjoined.

First year at the naval academy. He appears under Marine-Behörden, Commanden und Anstalten in the 1. Jahrgang — the first-year class — between Cvitkovich, Emerich and Fautz, Gustav Ritter von. He would have been fifteen.

- 27 July 1918
Still on the list. The last rank list this archive can find him in, printed four months before the monarchy he served stopped existing. Same birth year, same service date, same seniority.
Rang- und Einteilungsliste, 27.07.1918, p. 22
Two places below Julius in the seniority table of 31 August 1917 stands «Trapp, Georg Ritt. v.», with a long row of decorations after his name — the submarine commander who, after the war and a second marriage, became the father of the Trapp Family Singers.
They are not friends on the evidence; they are neighbours in a table. But they are neighbours because of something real: both entered the navy on 1 July 1898, out of the same academy intake, and they stayed within a few lines of one another in the printed order of precedence for twenty years. Where Trapp's row fills with orders and war decorations, Julius's carries two symbols. Both were still on the list in 1918.
- Where he was born. Not one of the 181 entries gives a birthplace — the lists record the year and not the town. Until a birth record is found he cannot be attached to Rijeka, to Bakar, or to anywhere else.
- Who his parents were. If he is the harbour master's family, the obvious candidate generation is the household of Franciscus and Bellinich at Bakar. That is a guess with nothing under it.
- When he died. The trail stops with the empire. Austrian, Hungarian and Croatian records after 1918 have not been searched for him.
- What his decorations were. The symbols are printed as small devices that the OCR renders as blots. They are legible on the page images and have not been read.
