The live tree, read against this archive

What David's own tree holds that this archive has never read, and what this archive holds that the tree has not.

This archive and David's MyHeritage tree have been growing beside each other for a year without either reading the other. The roster's family file was the export of July 2018 — 8,286 people, 254 of them of this surname. The tree exported on 16 September 2026 holds 15,643 people in 4,777 families, 1,413 of them of the name.

Reading one against the other is not a merge. It is four separate questions, and they have four different answers: who is in both and agrees, who is in both and does not, who only the tree knows about, and who only this archive has found. The fourth is the one people forget — a year of register reading here has turned up 780 people the tree still does not have.

Matching folds the nine spellings of this surname together and compares given names and years, so De Franceschi, Defranceschi and Defranceski are one family and not three. 117 of the 1,413 are living; they are counted here and appear below by name and town, never by a date.

A disagreement is the same person written down twice with one field wrong. The first pass at this called 2,414 of them disagreements, which was a cross-join wearing a finding's clothes: it paired every Francesco in the tree with every Francesco in the roster and reported the difference. The test that survives needs an anchor — the two must agree on one year exactly and differ on the other. Two people of one name and no shared year are two people, which is the thing this archive keeps having to say out loud.

That leaves 12, and they are worth a morning each.

And what kind of disagreement each one is
Set the twelve side by side and they are not twelve of the same thing. Three kinds, and only one of them needs a register.

Seven are a year's worth of arithmetic. Josephus 1886 against 1887, Cattarina 1825 against 1826, Jacobus 1762 against 1761, Valentinus 1776 against 1775, Davide 1876 against 1875 — the death year agreed in every case, the birth year out by one. That is what a record which gives an age rather than a date does: a man who dies in March aged sixty-four was born in one year if his birthday had passed and the year before if it had not. A headstone and a burial register will disagree for ever about which. Albino is out by two and Maria by three, which is the same fault with a rounder age.

Two are out by more than arithmetic can explain. Mario De Franceski, 1919 against 1924 — five years, on a man who died in 2012, which means somebody has a document. Girolamo of Omiš, 1632 against 1622 — ten years, and this archive's side rests on the published Omiš chart while the tree's rests on a MyHeritage profile.

Three are a disputed death, which is the serious kind. Clementina Maria of Gologorica, dead in 1840 here and 1870 in the tree — thirty years. Josephus Lambertus, the same parish, 1857 against 1878 — twenty-one. Lina Defranceschi of Torrington, 1923 against 1925. A death year is the one thing a parish register states outright, and this archive's Gologorica dates were read off the register itself. The Gologorica books settle two of the three in an afternoon.

And 2 rows that are not disagreements at all

These came back in mirrored pairs — the tree's 1786 against the archive's 1789, and then the tree's 1789 against the archive's 1786. That shape means both sides are holding the same person twice, under two years, and each copy is being matched to the other side's other copy. It is a duplicate to merge, not a date to decide, and this page will not pretend otherwise.

  • Petrus Defranceschi — held as 1768–1829 and as 1765–1829, Gologorica

689 of the 1,413 carry a citation David typed by hand. They are not where a reader would look for them: MyHeritage keeps its own Smart Match plumbing under SOUR, and the citations a person actually wrote are filed as NOTE records. Reading the wrong tag found 272 of them. Reading the right one found 689.

Between them they name 405 distinct FamilySearch arks — 311 indexed records and 94 film images, which is to say 94 pages of a register that David has looked at with his own eyes. 328 of them appear nowhere in this repository. That is the single largest unread pile this archive has ever been handed, and it was sitting in the family tree the whole time.

Two rows in that table are worth stopping on, and they say opposite things.

Italia, Udine, Stato Civile (Archivio di Stato), 1806-1815 — twenty-six citations, almost all of them at Mione, with Paluzza, Illegio and Naunina beside them. Twenty-two of the twenty-six people are already in this archive's roster, read off Antenati's images of the same registers. Two sources, worked apart, agreeing. That is the most reassuring number on this page — and it carries a practical consequence, because FamilySearch has indexed the Carnia volumes that Antenati is currently refusing to serve. Eight rows on the work list are stalled on that refusal. They do not have to be.

Argentina, Santa Fe, registros parroquiales, 1634-1975 — seven people, born 1899 to 1917 at San Lorenzo Mártir and at the cathedral in Santa Fe, carrying two surnames each in the Spanish manner: de Franceschi Bono, Defranceschi Gallucci, de Franceschi Marti. Six of the seven are new here. An emigrant branch this archive has never written a line about, and the tree has had the parish registers for it all along.

These are people in the tree whose names match nobody in this archive's roster — not the same set of given names, and not one name in common with a year in common either.

486 more would have been on this list and are not, because they are inside David's own placeholder pens: the scaffold of twenty-three country folders, each with town folders beneath it, that he keeps under a node labelled «for Investigation (not real)». He has already tested them and parked them, which is the opposite of untouched work. This page counted them as work on the day it was published, and it was wrong to.

What is left is 84, and they stand on this archive's own ground: Ližnjan, Crikvenica, Gračišće and Gologorica, with a handful in Brooklyn — which is the branch the DNA confirmed — and two at Metzingen and Urach, beside Pfullingen. Those are the ones worth a morning each.

And the other direction, which is the one worth being pleased about. 780 people in this archive's roster are not in the tree under any spelling. They came out of the registers, the headstones and the indexes, one at a time, and they are this archive's own return on a year of reading.

494 of them are now written as a GEDCOM — `data/to-the-tree.ged` in this repository — so they can go back into the tree as a file David reads before importing and can undo after, rather than as an edit somebody made to his data. It is stricter than the count above: anybody whose given names already appear in the tree at all is left out, because pushing those in makes duplicates rather than fixing anything. No living person is in it.

The 205 filed under the 2018 family file are the sharpest of these: they were in the tree eight years ago and are not in it now, which usually means a merge tidied them away.

The GEDCOM is not in this repository and will not be. It carries dates of birth for 117 living people of the name and several thousand more besides, and this site is public. What is committed is the reconciliation above, built by a script that applies the living rule before it writes anything down.
