the direct line, argued on the line

This chart is the direct line and nothing else. Brothers and sisters are not drawn here: this archive records kin against a NAME rather than against a person, so the family on a name page may belong to several different people of that name. Where it is drawn it is read from the direct line, person by person.

One relationship on this chart was never date-tested. This archive refuses a relative whose years do not fit — more than six out for a child, outside twelve to sixty for a parent. Where one side has no year at all that test cannot run, and the link is drawn on the name. It is shown because most people in the early registers carry no year, and refusing them would empty the chart of the centuries this archive exists to show. It is counted here because a line nothing tested is a weaker claim than a line that passed, and the chart cannot tell them apart.

What the archive knows

Anton Mario De Franceski, born 21 August 1944 at Reutlingen — the four-year-old who sailed with Zdravko and Ruža on the General M B Stewart. He was their elder child, not their only one: his sister Petrica was born at Horsham in the Wimmera nine years after they landed, and this archive did not know she existed until David asked why she was not here. The National Archives of Australia hold the household as one file: NAA A11534, 58–60 — «DEFRANCESKI Zdravko DOB 2 April 1921; Ruza DOB 13 February 1922; Anton DOB 21 August 1944», which agrees to the day with the Reutlingen and Neuhausen residence lists and with IRO card 52852. His own arrival card is NAA D4881, DE FRANCESKI ANTON MARIO — «Arrived Melbourne per General M B Stewart 13 April 1949», and it runs to 31 December 1976. That card is where the middle name comes from, and where the spelling does: De Franceski, with a space and no c, which is the spelling on this headstone and on his father's. The cemetery register says he was 56. Born 21 August 1944 he was 54, seven weeks short of fifty-five. Three documents — two German, one Australian — give the same birth date, and an age written into a burial register is the weakest of the four. Logged as an open question
