What the archive knows

Dead before 23 November 1771, and on the page only as a word: quondam. A marriage witness that day is entered as «Jacobo q. Jacobi de Franceschi» — Giacomo, son of the late Giacomo de Franceschi. Nothing else of him is recorded there: no age, no trade, no widow. He is the tenth man of the name at the castle, and he may not be a tenth man at all — this archive already holds a Giacomo De Franceschi born 1706 and another born 1731 at Svetvinčenat, and the father of a man marrying in 1772 could be either. None of the three is merged here. (doc for the fact of his death; the identification is open.) See Giacomo de Franceschi M 1772. His household is now partly visible. Four baptisms between 1750 and 1759 give a Giacomo de Franceschi and Pascasia as parents at this parish — the children being an unread forename (1750), Giacomo Battista (1753), Giovanni (1756) and Antonia (1759). Whether that Giacomo is this one is open: the register also carries a «Jacobus filius Jacobi Defranceschi» standing godfather in 1754, and godmothers styled «uxor Jacobi Defranceschi» whose forename reads as Veneranda rather than Pascasia in 1754, 1755 and 1756. Either two men of the name were married at once, or those three lines are misread at scan resolution; they have not yet been magnified. (inf, and flagged.) He had a grown son called Gasparo, and that collapses two households into one. Twice in 1762 the baptism register writes «Gasparo figlio di M.o Giacomo de Franceschi» — 1 August and 15 December, both magnified. This archive had been reading Gasparo and Giacomo as two separate households running alongside each other through the 1750s; they are a father and his adult son. (doc.) And the volume's own index dates that son. It carries «Casparg, of Jacobo De Franceschi and Anzola, 26 December 1737» — which makes Gasparo twenty-four in August 1762, exactly the age of an adult godparent. So Giacomo married twice: Anzola, mother of Gasparo, and Pascasia, mother of the four children of 1750–1759. (inf, from two records twenty-five years apart.)

No family is drawn for this name. The archive holds 5 households under it, and none of their dates do not fit this person: Gasparo De Franceschi × Antonia (1706) · Giacomo de Franceschi × Pascasia (1743–1759) · Giacomo de Franceschi × Anzola (1737–1737) · Giacomo de Franceschi × Nicolina Teserati (1773–1778) · Giacomo de Franceschi (husband of Francisca Marcario) × Francisca Marcario (1743–1753). A shared forename is not a family.
The same name, written another way

This archive holds 5 other pages under what Say Your Name reconciles as the same given name in another language — a Latin register, a Venetian clerk, a Croatian village, a Hungarian office. They are not merged and none of them is claimed to be this person: a shared name is not a shared identity, and the archive will not join one to the other by machine. It is here so that a reader looking for a man the records called Josephus can see where they wrote him Josip.

Identity here is by name, not by resolved individual. Where two people of one name appear in this archive they share this page, and it is for the reader to keep them apart — the surrounding text usually makes it obvious. Nothing here is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.

…no Defranceschi child of any Antonio in it, which is a real result and a wide one: it moves the question from where in this volume to was he baptised in this parish at all. The same frames handed over a different household almost complete. Giacomo de Franceschi and Pascasia turn up as parents in 1750, 1753, 1756 and 1759 — four children, three forenames, one of them lost to smeared ink. None of that was being looked for. A page-by-page read collects everything on the page, and the entries you were not hunting…

…two days this archive read Gasparo and Giacomo de Franceschi as two households at Svetvinčenat, because both stand godparent through the 1750s and both have a wife named in the entries. Then one line of 1762 — «Gasparo figlio di M.o Giacomo de Franceschi» — collapsed them into a father and his grown son, and a second instance four months later confirmed it. The lesson is about what godparent entries can and cannot carry. Dozens of them establish that two forenames are active in a parish at once.…

A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
