the direct line, argued on the line

This chart is the direct line and nothing else. Brothers and sisters are not drawn here: this archive records kin against a NAME rather than against a person, so the family on a name page may belong to several different people of that name. Where it is drawn it is read from the direct line, person by person.

What the archive knows

A householder of the name at the castle, named on his daughter's baptism of 15 February 1752 — «Matthæi Defranceschi, et Francisca ejus legitimæ uxoris ambo ex hac Parochia»: both of them of this parish, so the wife is local too and he is not an incomer. A man with a child in 1752 was born about 1720, give or take a decade. (inf for the birth estimate; doc for the appearance.) Film 005497885, image 161 — Births (Rođeni) 1709–1764 of Svetvinčenat, read on the plate 22 September 2026. In no index anywhere; it sits inside the fifteen-year hole 1738–1752 that neither the index nor any reading had touched. --- 28 September 2026 — his death is now bracketed, from his daughter's wedding. 9 February 1766 the marriage register calls him «q.m Mattio de Franceschi» — quondam, the late — when his daughter Elena marries Mattio Santalezza of Albona. Film 005497886, frame 53. So he died between 17 December 1752, when «Francisca uxor Jacobi» and he are both still in the register's present tense, and 9 February 1766. (doc for the styling; the bracket is only as tight as the two attestations make it.) His widow is not named in the act, which is the parish's habit — a bride's mother goes unmentioned even when she is alive and standing there. His wife now has a page of her own: Francisca de Franceschi, wife of Matteo (fl. 1741–1752) — and it was her name, written plainly in Irena's entry, that proved the mother of Casparus 1743 was somebody else. 28 September 2026 — a third daughter, found in the marriage register. «Fusca filia q. Mathiæ de Franceschi, Parochiana hujus Ecclesiæ» marries Marc'Antonio Jacomini of Parenzo on 17 November 1773, and among the witnesses is Mathias Santalezza — the surname his daughter Helena married into in 1766. So the household had at least three daughters: Helena, Irena and Fusca. He is «q.» again, as in 1766. (inf for the parentage, on the Santalezza witness and the dead father; doc for the act.) ⚠ And this page undercounted him too. It spoke of Helena and Irena. [h112] holds five children: Helena (1742), Maria (1745), Victoria (1749), Irena (1752) and now Fusca. The household file was ahead of the biography, and the biography is what a reader lands on.
